Shaft Question - how to make slick and remove dry wood feel

We got our younger Son a Action sneaky Pete cue as he is just starting to get into playing. He wanted A black color on the points and butt so that is the only one we could find. The shaft feels really dry. Not slick at all. I normally will go over a new shaft with parchment paper that really glosses up the shaft and ferrule and then follow with a little wood wax. But my method is pretty ancient. Just wanted to see what you guys to slick up the shafts of your cues and if there’s new products out there worthwhile that does the job. Thanks.

The shaft wood is junk on Action cues, and I bet it has a horrible taper on it.

That finish that is over the entire shaft can be removed using some 400 grit sandpaper. I bet the wood under it will feel horrible though. I believe the finish was put over the entire shaft to keep it from warping, because the shaft wood is such low quality.

Better to just buy a glove to be used with it.

Here is a decent shaft that I believe would fit on that Action cue.

Even this one would be far better then what is on that Action sneaky.

So you tell your friend, the old guy, to buy a Players Sneaky Pete after asking here and getting advice and you say it's better than $500.00 sneaky's you've handled in your illustrious career. You buy your own son however after that, an Action sneaky sight unseen, with a crappy shaft.

Cost difference was what? $18.00?

Like I said, your stories never add up. But you're the big tournament champion in your neck of the woods? Asking this question?

Sorry dude, not stalking you but it seems like every time you post I get the same impression - you're trying too hard to "be the man".

You make a good point. I believe that a Players sneaky would have come with a much better shaft, that would not have had that horrible sticky finish covering the entire length of the shaft, and for around the same price.

Ok Slow roll I will try once more for ya. My son just started playing and he wanted a sneaky Pete with Black points and black butt. That is the only one I could find in black. Nobody else under 200 makes a black sneaky. He may not like playing and quit so if he does then so be it. If he decides he likes playing and moves on to the next level then I can upgrade him to a better cue. You say you are not stalking me but you seem to open your mouth in every thread I post. How about this you worry about what you do and I take care of my own stuff and just bypass every thread I post on here from now on. For the record Chief I never said I was a big tournament champ. I Won a few back in my day when pool was big in our area. So to save you all the Heartache and Worry just by pass my threads from now on. If I want your input I’ll ask you for it. Fair enough

You tend to make yourself a target. If just looking for info on a pool related subject a simple search here will answer almost all your questions. If that doesn't work then open a thread.
Cool I understand That but don’t understand why if someone does not like a thread or person then why not just skip the thread and move on. I am Sure that everyone here has posted a thread that someone that was stupid but just skipped it and move on. I know I have. Being a Jackass takes a lot more energy than being polite. Just saying. Hey if it was not for people posting you not have a forum and the the haters run off everybody soon the forum goes down

I’ve had good luck with Tiger S4 sealer. Start with 400 grit, and work your way up thru varying grades to 2000 auto body paper. Then several S4 treatments, and more fine sanding. But even then, a glove would seem mandatory in a world where powder is now banned most everywhere equipment is good.

Apparently having the black points and the black butt on his Sneaky Pete is more important to him than having a better quality cue / shaft. Step sanding with 600, 1000, 1500, and 3000 sandpaper should get it very slick, followed by a wood sealer/wax like renaissance wax.

I take a similar path.

Hightower shaft sealer and hit it with micro mesh pads up to around 2000.

My buddy likes 0000 steel wool and it’s not bad.

Yep. First rule of raising good sons -- give 'em what they want and allow them to escape your guidance. GLWT.
Gee I thought you would make sure the kid is going to stick with something before you go all out. 2 who says a Action cue is a bad starter cue. 3 how many of you could be beat with a Action Cue. But most of you are Willie Mosconi and Efren rolled up into one tho. Gee the Apa must be begging for you guys to bring our awesomeness to the table. ESPN may want pool back Thanks to you.

Here is one with Black points and butt sleeve that is probably better quality then the Action, for around a $100.

Johnny Archer came out with this line of cues, back maybe around 2 decades ago. I know they have been around for a long time, and they are probably decent quality.

My 1st cue was a Dufferin sneaky, for $60, back in the early 90's. My 2nd cue was a Players, and it was a very decent hitting cue. Action cues have been pure junk (sorry) for as long as I can remember. Even a beginner should have a better quality cue then an Action, for their 1st cue.

Thanks 9 ball I Appreciate it. I will look into them. All the local dealer here had was Action cues that had a black sneaky. Some of the greats here seem to look down on Action but a Friend of mine who beat Shannon Daulton to a race to 10 has one that probably 15 years he uses in places he did not want to take his better cue in and it seems to hit pretty decent. One or 2 of these guys here are probably decent ball bangers but a few seem to either suffer from small penis syndrome or they are trying to impress someone. Either way they usually don’t amount to much. But Thank you for taking the time to get me a link. I Appreciate it.

I have heard that about the older ones being junky but I would say now most of these import cues come from the same factory. Probably same Chinese factory.

If you are doing the sealing by hand, what do you use for a sealer?

What was your best cue?
