Shaft Run out

I have some shafts that were final turn about 2 months ago. My question is what amount of run out do most cumakers allow in a shaft before they scrap it? I have about 15 shafts and they range from .002-.015 in runout.

That's not much runout. Where are you measuring at?

Before using a shaft on a cue, I put it between centers & watch for wobble. A wee-bit of wobble is fine & actually can be expected. Anything noticeable that you feel would cause the cue to wobble when rolled should be scratched. A shaft has to have considerable warp or an off centered face to cause a noticeable wobble when rolled in the table. .002" is less than half the thickness of a human hair, with .015" being roughly 3 human hairs thick. That's nothing. 0.2" would be a warp you'd notice but even that isn't enough to cause the assembled cue to wobble on the table if it's faced correctly.

It is not enough to hurt the play of the shaft, but it might drive some customers crazy and in turn they might drive you crazy.

.002 to .003 you'll have a hard time noticing even between centers......
Anything over is discretionary............015 is too close to the line for a new shaft.
