Shaft turn-down by cue dealer?

I am getting ready to purchase a low-end Joss cue online from a reputable dealer. I'm used to playing with a 12.75mm shaft (on an old Dufferin). Would you trust the dealer to turn-down the standard Joss 13mm shaft? It makes me nervous, but it seems to be commonly done. Thanks for your thoughts.

If he's offering to take it down for you then I'd say sure, why not? He's either capable or knows someone who is. It ain't hard.

BE CAREFUL!!!!! Make cure the type of taper is the SAME!!

A lot of the Dufferin cues use what is called a "CONICAL' taper, especially on the Phantom and Sneaky-Pete models of DUFFERIN cues. This is the type of taper that a lot of the off the rack bar cues are tapered by. Now, Danny with JOSS uses a taper that is different than this, "CONICAL" taper, JOSS uses a Pro-Taper and has also used a "Euro-Pro" type taper as well, but they also can make any taper you want to customize your shaft taper to.

I just want to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Make sure when you are looking at your old cue, that you measure the MM of the tip, then measure the taper at 4inches, 6 inches, 10 inches, 14 inches, 24 inches. Then if you give these to your cueman, then he can set-up the change in your new JOSS shape to have the same taper-turndown that you are use to. But, understand you will still need time to get use to the deflection and squirt exerted on the cueball and in the shaft. This will be different on almost every shaft.

Hope this helps a little, if you have any questions, feel free to give me a message and ask what you are thinking.

All the best, but like my father always taught me----MEASURE TWICE, THREE TIMES, EVEN FIVE TIMES, then cut once-----

Why?? Because the previous you can make a mistake and change the latter you usually cant fix as easily if you can fix it at all!!!

All the best and CONGRATULATIONS on your new equipment

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Why not contact JOSS? You can talk to a Hall of Fame cue maker directly and get the shaft you want. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Thanks.

Acedonkeyace: My Dufferin has a pro-taper, but in any case I'm not looking to replicate it exactly. I'm willing to trust Dan Janes' judgement on the taper of the shaft.

Renegade_56: "It ain't hard" is pretty much the answer I was expecting, since all the cue dealers seem to offer it. But if you're turning down a shaft, don't you have to make some decision about how far down the shaft to go, which affects the taper? I'm willing to trust Dan Janes' judgement, but not so willing to trust the cue dealer's judgement. Or is it simpler than that and I'm missing something?

Chopdoc: I don't think Dan Janes sells these lower-end cues directly, but I took your advice and shot him an email anyway.

Thanks again for your advice.

I would think that 'what dealer' you're buying the cue from will make a difference.
Seyberts offers T/Ds at what I believe to be a fair price (considering all that goes into a T/D).
I currently do all of their T/Ds and there are a lot of them. I sometimes do 5-6 a day.
Normally, I follow the existing taper unless the client has made a request for something specific.
One thing that has always puzzled me is that most of those requesting a T/D are doing so
on a new cue that they are in the process of buying (as you are).
They haven't received the cue yet, they have no idea how it plays but they already know that they want it T/D-ed.
I don't ask why, I just do what I'm asked to do.

So let me take this golden opportunity to ask; why do you want a T/D on a cue you haven't played with yet?
The difference btwn 13mm & 12.75mm is .010".

I have mostly played with my Falcon that has what I believe is a pro taper at 13mm. I recently ordered one of Bob Danielsons ss360 shafts with a 12.5mm shaft. I thought a half mm wouldn't matter much but in terms of feel, its a world of difference. I love it but still getting used to it.

My advise is to get the stock configuration and see if you like it. If not you can order a replacement shaft thats turned down to you liking. Keep in mind it will be night and day from your Dufferin you're used to.

I usually play with a 12.5 mm shaft. I had an opportunity to hit some with a new Joss the other day with a 13 mm shaft. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The Joss has a very comfortable taper, which I believe makes a much bigger difference then the actual tip size. I had no difficulty playing with the Joss.

Best advice I can give you is to try the 13MM size first. If you don't like it, then turn it down, you may find out that the Joss with 13MM hits better than your Dufferin with 12.5. There's nothing wrong with Dufferin cues, but a Joss is going to feel and hit differently, and you may want the slightly larger diameter tip. Try it first and see, and if you don't like it, then you can later have it taken down a fraction. You can take it down all you want, putting it back on is a lot harder....

Thanks for the great advice, all. We got these 13mm Lucasi house cues with the table, and they're okay, but they feel like tree trunks in my hand compared to my Dufferin. They also have a pro taper. But yes, I've been surprised to find that a small fraction of a millimeter could make such a difference, so I like the thought that it's some nuance of the taper and not just the diameter. So I am now leaning toward taking the 13mm, and seeing what I think. (If it turns out that I end up wanting it thinner, though, then it would have saved some money to get it that way at the start -- the dealer offers the thinner shaft at the same price.)

If he's ordering it from Joss just have him order the shaft size you want. they come 13.25 from Joss unless you specify a particular size.

I shoot with a 12.5 and a when I shoot with a 13 it seems huge. I have a 13.5 that I had made when I was experimenting with larger vs smaller shaft diameters, It feels like I'm shooting with a log to me now.

I would suggest calling the dealer your ordering from and asking if he can special order the cue you want from Joss with the shaft size done originally by Joss. You may have to wait on the shipping, but he can probably do it for the same price. If he won't do this I might check with cheapcues.com.. They appear to offer sizes on Joss shafts at no addition charge for what you want.
