Shaft turning question

I recently picked up a perfect d-9 McDermott that looks like it was never played. The shaft is 14mm and the joint is .875. My question is this; In order to turn the shaft from 14mm to a more comfortable 12.75, should this take time & is this alot of wood to turn down at once? The last thing I want is a perfectly straight shaft to be turned down, then move and I end up with a warp in the shaft. Or should I keep the shaft where it is and sell it. It is not really collectible, just incredibly clean. Thanks

No. By those numbers it will take a couple of sessions to take it down that far.
Leave it with a cuemaker for a week and let him take a little off for a few days to do it.
 
IMO, it's not going to make any difference.
You can take a year btwn cuts or you can do it all at once. It's not going to make any difference.

A 'D' series cue is like what, 20 yrs old? If it's stayed straight for that long then chances are it will be straight when you're done.
If the shaft has internal stress, all the time in the world won't make any difference. Time will not alleviate stress.
 
I read those numbers as 3-4mm, not 3/4mm. Thanks for the clarification.

You should send it to Mcdermott. I sent my M205 to them and they turned it from 13.2mm to 12mm perfectly. I sent it to do a full free warranty 10 point inspection, changed the weight from 18 to 19.5 ouces, they put a new bumper. It all costed me about $30-40 bucks, and that's includes the shipping. Not to bad, and they also warranty the work and the cue as well.

I say send it to them and it's quite fast, less than 1.5 weeks I got it back.

You can also purchase 11.75 to 13mm 2nd grade shafts from them for like $60 bucks, if you buy 2 which is $120 bucks free shipping!

I got 2 second grade shafts which were 100% perfect just each had a small unimportant sugar mark. Their second grade shafts is 100% structually perfect, just it may have a tiny dark dot or streak in the wood that didn't pass their quality control standards.

$120 for two Brand new and straight mcdermott shafts, PLUS, I got them with Silver rings to match my cues, what a deal. I got 11.75 and one 12mm.

I suggest you email Jaime at mcdermott, they will take care of ya. Mcdermott is by far my favorite production cue company.
 
Duce, thanks for the info. I had thought about McDermott, but I did not think it was cost effective.
