I would agree with you about not buying from a builder except for a few exceptions. One would be if their main business is cue building or supplying. For instance I build cues but I also turn shaft blanks to sell. I do pick out the top 2 or 3% of what I am turning for myself. But if you bought dowels from me you would get the same grade I am turning blanks from, including the 2 or 3% that would get picked out of the turned ones. So buying dowels from me would get the whole mix. But buying partially tapered blanks would leave you with the bottom 97% to choose from and that would be priced and sold accoring to the grade of each shaft. Also would depend on what you are looking for from the cuemaker and the price you are willing to pay. I used to let a couple of guys that lived near by, get into my private cues shaft box for over double price per pick. But they used very little so I did not mind.
