I recently bought a gilbert from a friend of mine and i have a question... i used to play with a norwella whos shaft was significantly different than the gilbert shaft. I believe the shaft on the other cue was 12.6- 12.5. Now im playing with a shaft that is a 13. ive always played with a thin shaft. ive even got one that got to be 12.2 through excessive use.

i feel like with the gilbert it spins the ball a whole lot more than my other cue so i see myself aiming a lot more closer to the center than i was before.

i want to get adjusted to the gilbert because i feel like it hits reeeal g0od. but im just wondering how long is it going to take for me to adjust? my friends been telling me to bring the shaft down but i dont know if its the shaft, my head, the cue.

i find myself doubting balls that i would normally sh0ot with confidence second guessing them and wondering what my cue ball is going to do.

thanks to you guys for the replys in advance

Hey there,

you gave yourself already the answer mate. You wrote that you really feeling comfortable with the *new* shaft. So use it in the future. It won t take long and you re adjusted with it. The most important thing is to feel comfortable with your *weapon* :p
Stop changing different shaft just because you miss some balls- this would drive you crazy.

I don t think it will take long if you really keep using just your gilbert-shaft-
And if you perhaps think about makin your new shaft *smaller* - think about that it will change the feeling amazingly. it will change it really a lot.

so just feel comfortable-the rest will come time after time .9

hope this helps a bit

Aside from the Gilbert being 13mm it no doubt has a much stronger taper (conical). Your old cue shafts probably are closer to a pro taper (straight). Just a good guess but after lots of play and probably some sanding it is what it is.

Give it some time and play with it. Don't listen to your friends. Which of them profess to be a shaft expert? I think the reason most say cut them down is deflection. If that was the case I'd buy an LD shaft instead of ruining a perfectly good shaft and the resale value. There are lots of cues in the FS section sitting there in part because of small shafts.

Practice and play with it, give it a fair chance, at least a month or two of steady use. You need to learn how the shaft reacts to off center hits. Then if its not for you, you make the call not anyone else. Do your homework in the mean time.

i'd look to be adjusted completely in about 6 months with regular use. i use a gilbert myself and to be honest you'd be hard pressed to find a better cue

Im not really to woried about the resale value of the cue bcuz i enjoy playing with it. Its just i cant figure certain touchy hits with it
