Shape of a snooker tip

I just received a snooker cue and I was curious to know the recommended "shape" for the tip. In the pool world, the most common tip shapes are contoured to an American nickel or dime circumference.

I wonder if there is a similar comparison in the snooker world.

Thanks in advance,
Ben

You'll find a number of posts on The Snooker Forum about tips, including this one from ADR147:

You can see photos of tips in this TSF page; in the very last post the question of the tip radius is raised, but no one has responded to that question yet:

Mike Wooldridge's video about retipping:

There are snooker players who play with a "mushroom tip", similar to what you see at the bottom of this page:

On most web pages about snooker tips that I've found, posters simply describe the shape as "domed". If you have a tip shaper for an American pool cue, then you might want to use the dime shaper.

Hi Rethunk,

I never knew about the different type of shapes or you can say that I never actually wanted to go in that much deep for the shape of tip. Amazed after visiting all the links. I think my knowledge about pool and snooker is increasing exponentially after joining this forum. A big thanks from my side.

You're welcome. Where do you play snooker?

If you haven't already, check out the many video links posted by Scaramouche, including the instructional videos.

You'll also find information at the website of the United States Snooker Association. The executive director, Alan Morris, posts in the forum here from time to time.

Thanks for the links and videos, all!

They were very helpful, but I do find it strange that pool has such exacting standards for tip shapes, yet snooker doesn't...

Interesting. If anyone has an idea as to why this is, I would be curious to learn more.

Thank you, again.

i think it's because the tip is so small....take a 9.5mm tip and shape the radius to a nickel or dime and you can't really tell much difference. with the bigger pool cue tips, the curvature is more noticeable. i shape my pool tips using a shaper with a radius gauge. with my snooker tips, i don't bother. i take some sandpaper and just eyeball a decent dome and that works fine. that's the way i've seen most other players do it too.

I'm curious to know if others have heard of this:

It was suggested to me to make the dome the same curvature as that of the cue ball. I'd like to see you compare them on your own cues. Note that you need to hold them at eye-level with the very top surface of the cue ball at the same height as the surface of the cue to see it properly.

Because pool players don't believe in instructors or coaching.
They pour money into equipment and gimmicks :grin::grin:

Would any pool player - particularly American - have Ray Reardon's attitude towards his cue?
