Shaping Layered Tips? Did I get the wrong tip tool?

So I just ordered a new cue from Ozone, and upgraded from the standard LePro to a Tiger Everest. I have been playing with a LePro for about 6 years , but though I would try something else. Anyway I ordered an Ultimate Tip Tool with the cue to shape the tip. I have read various opinions on what to use to shape a layered tip to avoid de-lamination.

It's been a while since I got my last cue, I don't remember will Ozone shape the tip when they install it? If they do I assume it will just be a rough shape, and I'll have to shape it to my liking? Will the Ultimate Tip Toll be ok to use on this tip?

I would assume they'll shape the tip to some degree before shipping it out. I've also shaped Tiger Sniper tips with the Ultimate Tip Tool and Willards shapers and the sandpaper inside a curved plastic holder thingy with no problems.
 
Hi Todd, welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure how they will ship your cue.

IMO, buy a Willard Cue Tip Shaper. Take a wood screw and mount it to a board & swivel the whole cue on the shaper.

Good Luck with the new cue.
 
I've just switched from Snipers to the Everest.

I did some shaping with sandpaper and it shaped up great.

I think you'll really like the everest.

I use that "sandpaper inside a curved plastic holder thingy" and have yet to have a tip delaminate.....I still use the origonal piece of sandpaper that came with it...if that tells you how often I use it.
 
I use a Willard (dime) shaper on my Everest tip. No muss, no fuss. I personally would not use a tip pick on a laminated tip, however.
 
Some of the responses recommend the Willard shaper and I'm in complete agreement with them. In my opinion, it's the best and probably the cheapest. I've been using it for about 3 years now and, like the Energizer Bunny, it keeps on going, and going, and going. I didn't mount mine on anything. I just lay it on the floor and hold it between my two feet, invert the cue, and just spin back and forth. Perfect shape every time. I do my buddies cues too whenever they see me doing mine. It's a great tool.

Shaping the top of the layered tip with the UTT is fine. Do not use the burnisher on the sides of the tip or you might twist the tip apart.
