If I am playing very cautious or serious I make sure the balls are racked tight and everything is touching. Then I break standing on the right side of the table with the cue ball off the second diamond. I bridge off the rail and make sure my stance is lined straight . I aim to hit the one ball VERY square in the face and I strike the cue ball right below center and a LITTLE to the right. Now this is the key, for me anyway, I stand a little closer to the table than I usually would for a normal shot and during the back swing the tip of my cue comes very far back , almost to my fingers, when I finally stroke I pretend like the cue ball is not even there and I just shoot thru the cue ball making my cue point a straight line to the one ball. I would put money on it that I make the one in the side 9 out of 10 times. The reason I break going for the one ball is this.... The hardest shot for me after the break - even if I am parked in the middle of the table is the one. Its ALWAYS in a strange place. If I soft break and make the one in the side I stand a good % of running out. The rock is in the middle of the table - balls spread out and no one ball in a funny place. Thats just my 2 cents. I hope this helps some. Dont give up at first - I practiced this break for hours trying to figure out just right. Also it can be a little different on each table so I try a few breaks out each time I shoot on a table Im not used to.

Why I hate the one ball ... after a break its usually here for me if I break a little hard and thats why I soft break
