I think more information is necessary. Are you trying to stop the cue ball, hitting it with follow, what kind of bridge, what kind of stance, etc.

The soft break is just hitting the rack a lot softer, usually when the Sardo Tight Rack is being used, to pocket a corner ball or the one ball. Corey Deuel is a master at it.

I typically break like the first diagram in this thread...but when that comes up dry I switch to a head-on break. When one doesn't work, the other usually does the trick.

If I am playing very cautious or serious I make sure the balls are racked tight and everything is touching. Then I break standing on the right side of the table with the cue ball off the second diamond. I bridge off the rail and make sure my stance is lined straight . I aim to hit the one ball VERY square in the face and I strike the cue ball right below center and a LITTLE to the right. Now this is the key, for me anyway, I stand a little closer to the table than I usually would for a normal shot and during the back swing the tip of my cue comes very far back , almost to my fingers, when I finally stroke I pretend like the cue ball is not even there and I just shoot thru the cue ball making my cue point a straight line to the one ball. I would put money on it that I make the one in the side 9 out of 10 times. The reason I break going for the one ball is this.... The hardest shot for me after the break - even if I am parked in the middle of the table is the one. Its ALWAYS in a strange place. If I soft break and make the one in the side I stand a good % of running out. The rock is in the middle of the table - balls spread out and no one ball in a funny place. Thats just my 2 cents. I hope this helps some. Dont give up at first - I practiced this break for hours trying to figure out just right. Also it can be a little different on each table so I try a few breaks out each time I shoot on a table Im not used to.

THe break set up

Why I hate the one ball ... after a break its usually here for me if I break a little hard and thats why I soft break

Also one more little tip .. If you do end up not making the one in the side and it ends up funny its usually like any where in this area ( where the 1 , 2 , or 3 is ) at times not leaving a good shot to get shape for a run out ....

Just put the one there for practice and throw out the rest of the balls on the table anywhere and practice good ways to get safe. It has helped me out a lot.

Here:
Just don't get too good at it and play me with it.
I have found great success with this break, and it took some tinkering with the pivot point on my BK2 to get it right. But this is the key, (look at where I hit the cue) then I use about 70-80% of my max speed and concentrate on hitting that God Dang one as freaking square as possible. Caution - when breaking from anyside of the table other than center, the cues path through the center of the one changes and follows towards the side you are on. Trying to hit the head on center of the one from a side break while trying to park whitey in the middle will result in a side pocket scratch most of the times.
