Sharking Allowed

In my area, the whole pool room is a shark! Loud jukebox ( screaming ) , drunks yelling, staff asking you if you want something as you're down shooting the 9 ball, people watching making comments on every shot as you shoot it. If you can play in what passes as 'pool rooms' now, you cant be sharked!
Ohh for the 70's!!!

A buddy and I were playing some one pocket the other day for free and the idea just popped into my head...I think mainly because he has been playing a lot of big sets lately and seems to be losing focus playing for free. I brought it up and he was pretty excited about the idea so its gonna go down. Nothing big, just cheap games or sets. But it will be fun.

Have any of you ever gambled playing sharking allowed sets? I haven't in a very long time but I remember it being loads of fun when I was younger. We will see. It should be a fun change of pace from the normal boring stuff at any rate.

Sounds pretty innocuous, what could possibly go wrong?
Uh, one dufus is watching you play and picks out the weaker player and gets someone to bet on the side .
That guy doesn't know whats going on, and sees his guy getting sharked to pieces, and decides to get revenge on the sharker, for costing him money.
I quit gambling many years ago for several reasons and everywhere I go, I make sure if I am playing someone, that people know I am not gambling and I do not want them to gamble on me, some do anyway.
The world is a different place today than even 10 years ago.
There are lots of desperate people running around with not much care for anyone else.
It might be all right at someones home, { although I have seen good friendships end over less} but I sure wouldn't do it in public.
I realise that it is no one elses business, what you are doing , and that they should not even be involved, but some of these idiots just can't help themselves, nor do they try, is it worth it?

During the 90's I used to stop through at Chicago Billiards in New Haven Connecticut. The "exercise" you are considering embarking on was a popular activity there. It was quite extreme & encouraged. All I can say is I've never seen anything else like it.

Where I play, if you like to shark players, you'll only get one warning from a guy who looks like a psychopathic serial killer. Rumor has it that he was once a loan collector for an organization that likes to remain low profile. His face bears the scars of a man that learned violence first hand and never lacked in participation. He walks hunched over, covered with muscles like a proud pit bull. Any objections on your part, triggers a fellow very short on patience. With your next sharking tactic, someone will dribble you across the floor and roll you out the back door. We have a few shooters that will do that, so it's a nice quiet place to play and enjoy your one pocket game. Lessons in pool courtesy are available, they're short, but they aren't free.

In the book about Kid Delicious that came out a few years back, Danny talked about learning to play in a room where sharking was part of the game. I think he even mentioned someone draping their "equipment" over the rail while he was shooting the 9 in a money game.

He said after playing in that room, he never got sharked over anything.

I've often written that "fun" should be allowed in pro matches. Nothing while a person is down on his shot, but any other time is fine. "My grandma could make that bank and she's been dead for 20 years!"

Let the player's personalities shine through.

Or, we can continue to invite people to the funeral. No wonder no one wants to watch it.
