i bought this lathe a couple years for $1000
never have gotten around to using it, just taking up space & collecting dust.
bought at hgr industrial supply near cleveland
it's a SHELDON from the 1950's according to the serial numbers i gave to a gentleman, john knox, from chicago. he worked for sheldon for many years and runs a sheldon lathe group on yahoo. he's the "go to guy" for any info about these war horses.

it's 3 phase, part of the reason i havent got around to getting it up & running.
regardless, i've decided i've gone this long without it, i don't need it.
i need the space more.
it's basically the same as my main lathe i use daily, just 10 or 15 yrs newer according to mr. knox.
there's a broken phenolic gear, i bought a new one from mr knox, $135

i THINK it's classified as 11x54, ( EDIT: IT'S 56" ) ( ANOTHER EDIT: DONT KNOW WHERE I GOT 11", IT'S 10")
CORRECTED: 10 X 56
with a 5MT dead center it's approx. 32" between centers
see pic dead center how far that sticks out, could be shortened
there is no chuck with it. it's same as my lathe 2.25 x 8
on the bed near tailstock are serial numbers EXL 23518
spindle is about 1.38"

so i have just over $1100 in it, not including the trip from cincinnati to cleveland and the uhaul trailer i rented to haul it back here.

this sucker weighs about 1200 pounds.
with the small uhaul trailer, i was able to get under my carport, all the way to the door of the shop. will have to be manhandled across the shop, 20 feet.
obviously i dont want to take a beating on it ,
so i'm going to say the price is $1200

I own a Sheldon lathe and use it everyday.
I believe it's similar to Brent's main lathe. Mine is 13" swing x 28" btwn centers.
This is a very stout machine and a fine example of ol' American iron.
Every Sheldon lathe I'm aware of will give tool-room accuracy with the right operator.
I do all of my jnt-work on mine and find it to be quite accurate and precise.
If I want to take-off a 1/2 thou., I can do it.
The ways are hard, the bearings are massive and the dbl. V-belt drive is light-years
ahead of the flat-belt drive on my SouthBend Hvy 10.
You can cut any thread you like, you can core using pwr-fd. and
even if this were to be your only lathe, you could easily mount a taper-bar.
Honestly, if I were just starting out, I'd be all over this like a fat girl on a cupcake.
The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking there might be another Sheldon in my future.
Someone would be wise to beat me to it.

I have 2 old Sheldon lathes. The main one is for all the joint/tip machining and does a fine job but the lead screw is getting tired. New screw/nut combo is $1300.00 so not going that route. Mine has an old variable speed hooked up which I have not been able to find a version coming like this from Sheldon. Going to look up that Sheldon lathe group and John Knox to get some info

My other one has been recently converted to variable speed along with having the lead screw replaced all by the previous owner.... a blind gentleman. I use it for gluing up my blanks and for coring mostly.

Both are very good lathes, Sheldon made a good product.
