Shishkebob has two variations: one resulting in a vertical-axis hit and one resulting in outside english on the CB. There's also an inside english variation, but Hal never really discussed it much.
Hal told me that he invented this system while at a cookout with his wife Sunny. At the cookout, he was skewering tomatoes and meat and was doing something like two tomatoes in a row, meat, two squash in a row and then meat -- and maybe topping it off with pineapple (something like that). When he looked at the tomatoes, he noticed that he rarely skewered them dead-center as they were usually both offset. According to Hal, he got an epiphany that he could probably make an aiming system with a skewer (pool cue), and he ultimately did. He ended up skewering a ton of tomatoes in order to create a "model," which ultimately got him lambasted by Sunny.
The jist of it is:
Outside English Version>>
There are three alignments:
- CB center to OB center
- CB center to OB outside quarter
- CB center to OB edge
Player aligns the cue starting from the center of the CB straight to one of the OB targets, as if he/she were hitting a normal center-axis shot. Once the alignment is locked-in, you pivot your cue to a tip of outside english and shoot. What's important is that you don't use BHE to create the pivot -- you must arc along the OB plane (flatter arc than what BHE delivers). It's been a while since I used this system, but you must send out a flat CB, so you have to hit it with conviction and some speed. Flat, meaning, no horizontal axis of rotation.
Vertical Axis Hit>>
All CB starting positions are not from CB center, as with the above flavor. They all begin with a sight picture that starts from 1-tip of the inside of the CB pointed to either the OB center, outside quarter or outside edge. Essentially, it's the same thing as the above version except that you're starting with your tip (and vision) starting at 1-tip of inside pointing to the targets and the arcing to center axis. With this version, speed of the hit isn't an issue.
Inside english version>> I don't remember the exact details. If I get to a table, I can probably figure it out. It's prob the same as the vertical axis hit with no pivot. I don't honestly recall, it's been so long.
Combinations>>
Once again, my memory is weak because it's been almost a decade since Hal was showing this to me. First rule is to avoid combinations because, according to Hal, they're just too chancy unless the balls are really close together and sitting correctly. That said, my vague memory is telling me something along the lines of aligning the inside quarter of the CB to the outside quarter of the OB with your cue on that line and then pivot to center. I know I'm missing something but maybe with a little time at the table I can fool with it and remember what he told me.
Anyways, that's shishkebob -- there are no contact points with shishkebob.
