I have been down with the flu for over a week, and didn't go out the weekend before that, but felt better yesterday, and my horoscope said I would get pulled into the action anyway, so I decided to go for it and enter the 1st Seniors Tournament at Shooters here in Wichta.
It is a 32 player tournament, $50 entry, $500 added, race to 5 8 ball tournament. I The tournament filled, and it had a Calcutta too.
Names like Terry Young, who just won the VNEA Seniors 9 ball, and took 3rd in the VNEA Open 8 Ball this year and is the owner of Rumors here, Junior Brown,Paul Weigand (owner of Shooters) Kim Thompson, Bob Owen(of Shurtz Custom Cues), James Hadley, Robert Anderson, Ramon Tecieirno, me, and others. I think they ended up with about $2,500 in the calcutta with Terry going for $450, the most.
I won all 3 of my matches last night. Robert Anderson knocked off Terry Young in the first match, but he is making his way back through the left side. Paul Weigand beat Kim Thompson his first match, and yep, I had to play Paul the second round. We went back and forth, tied at 2-2, and I broke and ran the rack to go up 3-2. I also won the next rack on Paul's break, but I made a mistake in the next game, and Paul punished me by running out, and winning the next game on his break. I broke the last game with it hill-to-hill, some balls were tied up, and Paul got in line for a break out, but missed the ball to get broken out on the foot end rail, and the cue ball fell in the side.
This gave me the opportunity to get real close to my ball tied on the end foot rail, make in the corner with a little angle to go around his ball, and pull the cue back over to the other side for my last ball in the other corner, and I shot the 8 in the same corner. Paul is a big logic player, very deliberate when he shioots, with a slow preshot rountine for EACH shot. 8 ball is his best game, and he is always a very tough competitor.
The tables has just been recovered the preceding few days, so they are breaking pretty good. I won the toss my 3rd match, and the first break, I made 5 balls with the 8 going, which is a win in this tournament. I struggled some the 3rd match, but won 5-3.
Only 4 of us left on the right side, with James Hadley playing Jr. Brown, and I play Robert Anderson at 3 pm today. The left side starts a little earlier at 2.
So far, it is a fun competitive tournament, and I didn't know some of the players playing were actually 50 or older .... LOL
I will post more tonight to let you know how it turns out.
