Shooting Gallery pool term Definitions???

Before I get slammed here, yes I was watching Shooting Gallery. In the beginning they go through and give terms and definitions. Like giving weight is handicapping. It said Shot stop, then gave the definition, A Local Player. Now am I just slow here, or is that totally wrong:confused: ???

I'm thinking they must have meant "Shortstop" as in a strong player, but just below pro level.

"Short Stop" is generally used to refer to a high "A" player. That's how I use it. I guess when they say "a local player," they mean a player who is known and respected locally, but not nationally, which would fit the short stop definition I think. There are other definitions too, which I'm sure others will fill you in on.

The term is "shortstop", and it refers to a top local player. A shortstop, however, is not considered to be on the level of a professional-caliber player, and is thus considered to be a good spot for a solid road player.

I never saw the movie but I might have an explanation. The only thing I can think of is that the guy might've said Shortstop with a heavy Brooklyn/Italian or Boston accent turning the word Shortstop to sound like Shotstop... Maybe... I dunno :p

What is Shooting Gallery? A movie?

To spare anyone the incredible suspense of the plot and just to demonstrate how bad this movie is, everyone in the movie except the main character and the token hottie gets shot and the two then drive off in the sunset together.

Okay, your probably gonna watch it anyway, but you were warned!

I actually like the movie. The pool in it is horrible, but it has some good lines in it and the characters are cool. The plot is strong but not played out well and its very confusing on the first time through the movie.

Its a horrible pool movie, but an OK B-movie. I enjoy the flick.

... and im sure im gonna get e-slapped for this, but I like the term cecil for 100 bucks, LOL.

Shooting Gallery is a movie by Keoni Waxman. It was originally called Poolhall Prophets. And if you like bad pool as much as youlike bad acting, then you had better watch this baby soon!!!!

It stars Freddie Prinze Jr. who I have a tough time believing as a pool player (or a human for that matter) and Ving Rhames who also does an impressive job of bad acting!

Check it out.

Ohh it's a craptastic movie! By far one of the worst movies i have seen, it makes that scifi movie with Travolta look like The Hustler.:D :D

If you view the "Bonus Material" they talk about the making of, and admit that they actually makeup some of the terms used.

BTW...Shooting Gallery was easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen, all time.

I had to power my way through trying not to bail.

I tried three times to watch it, each time starting from where I left off. Fist time made it 20 minutes into it, second time an additional 10, third time an additional 5, and then completely gave up on it.
I actually got angry at how bad it was. Wasn't even laughable.

wow i thought the movie was bad but it wasnt terrible......it seems like the color of money when you compare it to poolhall junkies. It might be looking at the hot girlfriend that got me thru it, shes smoking.

Except for scottcoyote, the rest of you guys are WAY off base. That girl was hotter than the surface of the sun. What is wrong with you?

P.S. - Was there pool in the movie, I can't seem to remember anything but the girl?

How could you tell if they said shortstop or shotspot...the music was so loud and the sound terrible? Johnnyt

A shortstop is generally a local player that plays just below pro speed. Either looked at as good action or a good steerman. Often shortstops will go on road trips with better players to act as the bait.

That movie is stupid but it has one line that I found particularly funny, when the crooked cop drag's Tony's girl into the bathroom and locks her in Tony goes "hey man, that's my wife" and then proceeds to just forget about her and go play pool.

I don't know why I found this funny but it just struck me that way. Maybe because us players are in love with the game more than anything else.

I only caught bits and pieces because there weren't any captions, but I did hear "sessil, sessil, sessil" a lot. The accents and dialogue are awful. Then they not only made up their own jargon, they butchered actual pool terminology. It's a good thing this movie never made it to theatres, or we'd have a bunch of assclowns running around our pool halls rambling about dandelions and lemons.

The shots, bridges, and "sharking" these guys are doing are all crap. I've never seen anyone other than a ballbanger do the rack twirl or rack in numerical order.

Another thing: If their "TRIBES" (*stiffling laughter*) were trying to hustle, why did they get branded?
