short cue vs jacked up playing cue

When my pool table was installed, there was one area so close to the wall that they gave me a short stick to use there.

Obviously, opponents take advantage of this.

The forced choice of using this wretched short cue vs jacking up my Jacoby is quite frustrating.

How do you solve this dilemma?

I'm in a similar situation.. my room is just a tad to narrow so I am jacked up often when running balls...

what I did was to design my primary practice workout in such a way that I can hit every shot level with a full stroke..

mine isn't a 1 bad spot problem.. it exists along an entire wall lengthwise.. but after shooting on this table for a year and a half.. my accuracy when shooting jacked up has skyrocketed..

shooting jacked up with a full cue is a handy skill to have. and has won me many games.

find a way to turn your negative into a positive.. and you will fare better in the long run.

good luck.

I've got 13' of clearance which means no backswing room while shooting off the rail directly across the table. I've got a couple of 52" cues but they are rarely used. Learn to use the shorty and use it when you need to. If you aren't comfortable shooting with your regular cue, use the short cue. View it like using a mechanical bridge, a necessary evil.

I've got one very small area in my pool room where I need to use a shorty. It's only about a 4 x 4 inch section by one of the corner pockets. Even so, it drives me nuts having to jack up and using the shorty didn't make things much better. Then a friend told me the shorty I had was a piece of junk and they make short cues that are weighted to feel like regular cues. This may be real obvious to some people, but I had no idea. It's not like I've ever gone "shorty shopping" before.

Once I got the nicer shorty stick that's weighted properly, I can hardly tell the difference in the feel when I shoot those shots from that close to the wall area.

softshot makes a good point that it can help you to become deadly at shooting the jacked up shot, but i much prefer to shoot with a shorter cue and shooting jacked up.

I even have a little short shaft (8-10") that i picked up about 10yrs ago, I kept it in my pool case for when I went to those bars with the tables too close to the walls or as in one place they had a BIG POLE just 1.5ft from the table lol.

In instances like that I would bust out the little shaft and put it on, or just undo my playing cue and use the shaft to make the shot, I even had a joint protector filled with lead to use with just the shaft to shoot with.

no matter what tho too small a room is a pain in the arse!

I could have gotten a nice diamond 9' for a good price, but decided to go with the 8.5" OS brunswick instead....a full stroke and you still have 6" all around my table, if i had installed the 9' i'd be hitting the wall constantly on the backstroke, something I can't really live with.

I would agree with the ghost and probably lean toward using the dreaded short cue in those situations. At least it allows you to remain closer to your natural stroke.

I had a few people PM me about the weighted shorty cues so I guess I wasn't the only person that didn't know about them. :)

For those asking, they are called Trouble Shooters and are readily available online.

Which supplier has the best one?

Trouble Shooter cue

My 42" 19oz cue came today. Obviously, its not like a regular cue, but its better than the little toothpick I was using & most of the shots to be done are less than the width of the table.

With a little practice, I think I will be able to maintain runs, formerly challenged when I got safed into those areas restricted by my staircase.

If I win the lottery & build a dream home, obviously an adequate poolroom will be a priority.

The Pool Dawg link at the top of the page has them and they also have them at Ozonebilliards. The brand name is Trouble Shooter and they are just much more natural feeling then those super light toothpick shorties.

If you got a Trouble Shooter shorty, please post your results after you have used it a bit. A lot of guys here are stuck using their shorties. /snicker
