I had a Balabushka and met Pete Glenn, the famous collector to sell him my cue
way back in the 80s
he hemmed,i hawed and we couldn't get together so he said lets play pool
All I knew was he was kinda old and rich, well I never feared age and always played anyone with money,my feeling was that I had enough sense to quit before I
went broke and I didn't know about him
So I said "lets play" he said how much?
A couple of hundred or so I said
this was not a bad bet back then, especially when I didn't know the guy, because I was never a good player, but I had a way of always getting big games and winning
My good friend Jack Potter, who went to school at my school and was from Oak Cliff
like me and therefore cut from the same cloth as they say
Jack could play pool,I mean Jack was really good,he beat me with the orange crush wild, but I was always getting the pot stirred up.
So Jack figures to take half my action, half from greed, half from figuringi f i lost then he could step in,and half from fear that if I won $10 or $20,000 and he wasn't in,then he would feel like a fool,(these things happened every so often, one time about a month before this episode)
well the game gets going, one pocket of course,I win the first game and miss an easy shot in the next game, and then another easy shot and the guy wins.
Potter can play for $1000 a game without showing the least emotion, not the least thought of losing but when it comes to betting on the side, especially betting on a guy who misses balls...well that is a different story,Jack gets nervous and weak
so after the game he says"what do you think"
I said"I don't think the guy can play"
he says "thats not the problem,he probably can't play, but we know you can't so what are we doing? ,this is gambling"
so I said fine, jack has no heart,I went on to make a small contribution to Pete college fund for his grandchildren
But everyone said I had a lot of heart.
Later Jack explained that when they said I had a lot of heart,it really meant I was a sucker
I asked those within ear shot if he was right
he was
