I like Grady's rules- If you miss without calling safe and leave your opponent hooked or otherwise at a disadvantage, he can give it back to you. You have to pay for your mistake rather than your opponent. There are a few more rules to it than that but that is the key part imo.

If you really look, you will find some minor disadvantages to Grady's rules but these minor disadvantages are clearly outweighed by the advantages.

I agree and i see only benifits out of making it call shot.

If you are really serious about haveing a 9 ball tournament with 'Call Shot' only rules, you should run your own tournament.

You could be the first successful tournament using this format.

Good Luck, Sorry,,, you don't believe in luck... or you'd be playing regular 9 ball rules.

this would kill 9ball, 9ball is meant to be a faster game and more exciting for tv.

This topic comes up pretty often. I thought I had figured out a rule set that would make everyone happy and it turned out to be pretty similar to Grady's rules. The downfall of those rules is that it eliminates multi-way offensive-defensive shots.

Even the call shot 10-ball rules kill multi-way offensive shots. Here's a cool shot that never could have happened under call shot rules:

(Unfortunately the YouTube of this has been removed but the layout is still there.)

So you really do lose something by making these changes. Maybe you could just make the money ball called and solve something without losing much; as long as you don't require it to be verbally called on an obvious shot. LOL.

Anyway my point is that it is not a minor change in my opinion. It takes away an entire class of unique, exciting, shots. Some of these don't come up that often, but when they do, it's a real treat.

Exactly! This game is built for speed. Called shots take the speed away.

this would be as damaging as everyone using the soft break.

being from the old school, I really think pushout was a much better game.

Absolutely!! However, I think changing the rules to take the "luck" out will, as I've said before, make people stop playing in droves. I do think 9 ball will decline as a major game as time passes because of the advantage of the soft break and the current one-foul-bih rules.

Hell no. If you can't deal with the luck factor, play another game, 1-pocket or straight pool. The luck factor in 9-ball is kinda like poker. The best player will win in the long run regardless of luck.

I don't know about call shot but call pocket on the 9 seams reasonabe.

Call shot = call pocket in BCA/WPA rules. It appears that we know as "call shot" from the bars isn't even acknowledged as a possible way to play by any official rule maker. Maybe if we ignore it, it will go away. :D

Thanks for all the replies:D

Keep em coming

My concern was all big players have been saying 9 ball is very easy and everytime all players runout very easily and they should move to more 10 ball.
So i think instead we can add a little more difficulty to 9 ball by making it call shot and it becomes little more challenging.what i mean is changing it in the professional level games

bar rules 8-ball is call every detail.... your right No one plays like that... except for the 80% of all pool players in america..

if we have to keep thinking of ways to change the rules to make 9 ball better, the game is flawed.....why not just leave the Texas express rules alone, or play 10 ball.

when is the last time the rules were changed for one pocket? 14.1?

I Agree With Buddy

I have never actually played 9-ball with the push out option (other than right after the break) I did not start playing pool until after that rule was long gone.

I do like the idea of spotting all balls and having to shoot out of the kitchen on a foul.

Bar Box or course would have to remain Texas Express, but there is no reason you can't spot balls on most 9' tables

The only reason I don't like making the game call shot is that if you are hooked and you manage to kick out and pocket a ball (no matter what pocket, you should be rewarded) The call pocket and push out rule would eliminate shots like Efren's 2 rail kick against Earl in a Reno event.
