... how can a governing body just make a type of break illeagal ...
I don't think it was any governing body that did it. I think it was one person.

Banning the soft break is stupid, IMO. If Corey can do it, everyone else can but they choose not to.

This is very true, I've seen lot's of top players like Archer and Pagulayan use a soft break on many occasions, usually on tables that are breaking fairly easy and the wing ball dropping is pretty much a given. And then you have players like Wu that absolutely crush the break and park whitey in the center of the table everytime:eek:

After all the fuss about Corey's soft break this last year, I was curious if people here agreed with the change in rules to stop him using the soft break.

Earl's opinion don't count, he breaks hard so of course he wants it changed. He jumped better than almost everyone in the world for years and years so of course he hated the jump cue, too.

Personally I don't like changing the rules to stop a break that has been legal for years. As long as you make a ball or drive four to a rail, it should be legal.

It is a conspiracy by sissys who did not want to see corey winning.

On a related note, why does the IPT have a rule banning side breaks in 8-ball? (In the IPT, one is only allowed to break inside of a certain box.) It seems to me that if a player wants to break from the side, they should be allowed to.

Having played in a league using IPT-like rules this year, I can verify that it is more difficult to make balls on the break from the box than on the side. Not impossible, but harder.

I think the IPT has the intention having fewer break and run games and more "classic" games. Mike Sigel might not agree with this analysis after Kevin Becker broke and ran seven racks on him from in the box on an IPT challenge table.

I personally feel that the better players will learn to break and make balls from in the box and this won't be much of an issue.

As long as the break follows the rules of how many balls go and where and the cue ball is hitting the ball it should then it shouldn't matter. I got the chance to see Corey's break at the Jacksonville event and was very impressed. Would love to learn it. My break sucks.

short of stature doesn't mean anything

Muscles has nothing to do with break shot power. I witnessed a break contest where Corey and some other notables lost to a girl who doesn't weigh 100 lbs soaking wet. She beaks like Bustamante; lifts the cue to almost 45° and hammers the balls. Brandy Brown out of PA.

nothing wrong with the soft break as long as it follows the "rule" as in the original one, no point of changing something that is not even wrong to just simply try to pull away the innovations.

pool games have been on this planet for years, everyone who plays for a while, can be fairly okay with the game, dont we? but who will be the pro and on top, is about how they personally master the game, Corey is definitely one of the smarties, and his style is for the smart players, too.

whats the point of smashing the shyt out of the planet, for the sake of the sound? to just simply please the audience? i reckon if people do realise the soft people, they will love it more.

for people who wana see it, there is a youtube video of him beat Efren under 'pool' group.

You Play Your Game & I Will Play My Game.

Like I Always Say You Play Your Game & I Will Play My Game.
Pool is a mind game and if someone doesn't like the way you break the balls then your in there head Good Job!!!:D

I have a friend that playes one pocket all the time and when he breaks in 9 ball you would think your playing him one pocket and it drives players crazy and he is in there head rite from the break!

Corey's goal when he breaks is to make a ball and have a shot on the next ball. I have seen him break softly and then run the rack. Now if he was breaking softly just to leave the balls tied up for his opponent then I can see where it might be justified for the other players to complain. But I see it as a pretty good strategy on Corey's part since he is in his opponent's head before he makes his first break.

Besides, Corey's soft break is harder than Allison's hard break.

10 ball may be the better game, but for TV it may not be the best thing. With the onslaught of tight pockets and the fact they noboby can make balls on the break in 10 ball like they can in 9 ball, 10 will come to a crawl and the TV fans will be bored out of their minds.

The 10-ball ring game at the DCC had enough break and runs, but not automatic runouts like the 9-ball quarters/semis/finals or that idiotic ESPN 7-ball. The players realized they had to hit them very hard to hope for a decent spread. So, it was exciting from a breaking stanpoint as well. Alex and Efren were breaking the best (hardest with control), and not surprisingly, they were the last two.

From a player standpoint, it was a perfect balance to watch. I don't know how the general public would like it.

Id say Brandy is 115 lbs soaking wet- I entered her in the breaking contest at Valley Forge a few years back. She did a 24 or so and Carmine Sardo almost had a heart attack. She led the whole day but when i went back late, the new leaderboard had just one name 'Sarah' . No need to ask Sarah who.

I saw Brandy 2 years ago at the Open and she had moved to Memphis with a well known pro. Brandy plays a little wild but could be a force on a regional basis with the women. I dont know what is keeping her from playing.

I disagree. If somebody doesn't miss or make a mistake once in a while the game is boring. The players are too good for 9-ball. Nine ball is just a "shortstop" on the way to 10, 12 or 15 ball. The players need to be allowed to show their true skill level.

personally i like his soft break, once i seen him on t.v. break with this soft break and three balls didn't cross the middle of the table which was a foul and they showed a few pros commenting on his soft break alot of them don't like it but they say he wins alot with it. So yeah as long as he can get those balls across that line i think its kewl.
