Should I first learn to jump or kick?

Both are skills that should be learned and both take practice. If you are playing someone that is advanced, most likely they are not going to leave you an easy jump shot so I would say learn to kick. There are many videos on youtube and such that show different systems for kicking. Take one that seems easy and practice some with it.

One thing I would say is you are better off learning some sort of system for kicking. It doesn't have to be that complicated as even the simplest system is much better than just a wild guess. When you poke and hope, usually the outcome is not very good.

Thank you all for your advice. I am going to start to practice kicking at every session to improve my game. But enough of you suggested jumping for a faster result that I have ordered a jump cue from Steve Lomax today. Hopefully, with enough practice both kicking and jumping will make me a better competitor.

For kicking instruction (or fantastic instruction on anything else under the sun) Dr Dave's website is a valuable resource.

Another absolutely fantastic resource that is sure to have kicking instruction along with everything else is Bob Jewett's website:

And finally, many years ago a member here named DeadAim posted a very lengthy instructional series called "kicking academy". It is also excellent. It was compiled into a .pdf file available at this link:

These three resources are as good as it gets.
