stupid question for most but I've never played with one of these tips, are you supposed to scuff it? will that damage it?

btw, without even having shot with it yet, $66 for this Rage jump break cue seems like a steal

For the most part, no such thing as Stupid Questions, just Stupid Answers.

You will find that you will benefit from giving your phenolic tip a scuff once a week or so as needed.

They get glazed over easily and won't hold chalk well.

You will not damage them and wear them out very quickly by giving it enuff of a scuff in order to make it hold chalk properly for you.

It can and will last you for a very long time.

Depending on how much you play, you be the judge on how much you need to scuff it. If you are satisfied with the tip, count on having it a minimum of at least 4 years and probably longer. It will pop off first before you wear it down.

dont scuff it, it should be already shaped (round)

The glazing seems to be more of a problem than anything else.
When you get better stoke/aim, the glazing will not be such a problem to you.
When brand new, it should be fine.

I have a bk3 now and have others with phenolic,.,i occasionally scuff it,.well scratch the surface with tip tool ,.,it helps hold chalk better and does not hurt the tip at all

You're not going a damage it and you are trying to prevent a large miscue happening when you are just slightly off center on the cue ball. If you're tip is well chalk and you you hit the cue ball solid but perhaps a tinge off center, you still should be able to give the cue ball a good ride.
