I think certain skills of our professionals are minimized because of the use of the jump cue. Years ago, I was a good shortstop, played good safeties and could masse and kick at the ball fairly well. Certain skills are not as necessary because of the jump cue which is, in my opinion, a tool which lessens the need to sharpen those skills.

I believe most all-around players would prefer the outlaw of the jump cue. We would then see a necessity to apply certain skills not as often used: kicking, kick safeties, three rail kicks, cushion caroms, English shots, or masse shots. The more creative and skilled player would have a slight edge and I believe the spectators would rather see those skills displayed rather than a jump shot. Just have the player jump balls with the same cue he plays with. The really tough jump shot requires dexterity, strength and height, attributes that most average pool players don't have. Which skill would you rather see in a match, a jump shot or a well executed masse shot?

I agree with you Jayz. The jump cue should be banned. What about shooting with just the shaft to jump a ball? I saw some guy playing one hole using the shaft to jump balls and he was phenominal at it.

No... I just bought mine. At least let me get some return on my investment first. lol

Bruin dude you have 400. How much padding do you need? I'll never catch up.

I'd prefer to see a good kick than a jump shot. But at my level. down with the small fish and marks it doesn't matter because very rarely do you see anyone with a jump cue.

i don't think it should be banned, it'll take away the excitement of the game even though 2/3 rail kick shot are eciting to see aswell but wut about the people who doesn't know much about pool, this might make the ratings go high on tv is they see them jump shots. There's really no point of bitchin about it, it's either you do or don't wanna jump, no point in ruining other people's preferences. In every sport there comes a time where they make inovative products that improves peoples game and this happen to be one of them. By me saying improve i'm not sayin that it'll make you a better player if you know how to jump but it certainly opens up alot of options for one

Also Pool is a sport and like every sport it will evolve and change over the years, either by rules or the equipment.

i agree with you jayz regarding about the skills, i myself dont have the jumping skills at a competitive level, but im more creative on my shots.
however, i voted yes, if you are going to disallow jump cues, then break cues should also be banned, or in other words, a player cannot change a cue when playing except when it broke during a match...

The jump cue, like a break cue, is part of the game and should not be banned! There are many players that can kick 2/3 rails consistently, the jump cue only adds to their arsenal of available shots. To each his/her own if they choose to use the jump cue. It's available to everyone, but not everyone will make it available.

If I owned a nice table then I would ban jump and masse' shots on it, but on all other tables it is part of the game. Since a lot of pool players also play golf would you also ban the sand wedge?

Here we go again.....

I agree, and we should also ban all of the other things that have been "invented" for better pool playing. Start with leather tips, you cannot be a good player if you need a leather tip and chalk to add spin. If spin were meant to be part of the game of pool then trees would have chalk and tips on their branches. And burn all the books, tapes and dvds with instruction, especially the ones with any kind of systems. Everyone who is interested in playing pool shoudl be given an aptitude test and IF they pass that then they should all be issued a wooden dowel of the same size and shape so that no player has a real or perceived equipment advantage over the other.

I don't know where you play but all the places I have ever played at and through all the matches I have ever played in all of the skills you have mentioned were on full display by all the participants. I would just once like to run into a player who wants to play me for money that jumps everything and either never, or doesn't know how to, kick at balls. Just once. So far though everyone I play is pretty adept at both.

If jump cues had been as neccessary in 1940 as they are today then someone would have invented them and you would be using them without debate today. Today's rules make jump cues a neccessity unless you feel it is fair to reward poorly played or unintended safeties with ball in hand or a victory.

When Bustamante lost the Challenge of Champions to Fong Pang Chao after Chao executed a jump shot on to the seven, it was not because of the jump cue that Busti lost but because he played the WRONG safety. He could have chosen to play a safety that guaranteed at least a two rail kick at a ball laying on the rail but instead chose to give Chao a shot at an open ball and paid the price for it. And the crowd went wild and the Bunjee + Chao's little bit of skill brings home 50 grand. How do think Chao would vote?

Damn John, your argument is just too darn strong. Alright then, lets have jump cues then. Gee!

Pros shouldn't play with them but don't ban.
Pls don't ban them as I plan on making my own.:D
I think I'm gonna paint it gray and call it Kangaroo.:D

I don't think the original poster was suggesting banning jump shots, but specialized jump cues. I wouldn't have a problem with banning jump cues. There is nothing more impressive than when you think a player is hooked, then they just jack up their normal playing cue, execute a proper jump shot, jump the ball and make the object ball with shape on the next one. That takes a lot of skill and knowledge and is a helluva lot more impressive than making your way back to your case to screw together your specialized jump cue and making a big production over it. Of course, the amateurs I see doing this most often miss many more times than they ever actually get the cue ball up and over... :)

jump cue

yes ban them. that is like using a foot wedge in golf!!!! kick out that is the way the game is to be played.learn your rails!!!1

So, once someone learns the rails, then what? There's always going to be something new that people are NOT going to like and some are, grow with the changes and benefit from them!
