Show your palmers

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Cue-making in colorful times. As I stated in prior posts, I like the Palmers with the Dacron/Nylon wraps and IMO, the more color the better.

Palmer

Model # 8 1st catalog

There are some beautiful cues on display here but what I would like to say is I use my Palmer on a daily basis it's my playing cue. The cue is 48 years old yes it's been restored
the point Is the quality of the cues made back in the day.
They don't make them like they use to with good care these cues should last a life time.
Thanks for all the pics.

In a land long ago and far away, I dreamed of owning one of the famed Model 20 Palmers, the model that people either love or hate, appreciate or dismiss, or in my case, either can or can't afford.

The latter being the case, at least at the time, I embarked on having one made. It was a long build time and as time went on, the market for Palmers softened and prices dropped bringing a real Model 20 down into my range of affordability. Getting my hands on a real 20 aided in an accurate build of the Tribute 20.

So what we have here is a pair of "Model 20's" or more accurately, not really as one is a pretender. I turned the personalized foil on the real Palmer away from the camera, just for jollies. The faux 20 has genuine Palmer foil but is not embossed in any way and I would never ever insert a real or reproduction foil in that window. We don't do those things around here. Besides, I like the cue for what it is: a Model 20 Tribute.

Wow! Just awesome!

But you left out a very important peice of information........ Who built the tribute?

You can't hide the tribute because of the diamonds. The color of the pearl in the original is also a dead giveaway. Both gorgeous pieces...

I haven't had these out in a while. They have been in storage collecting dust. There are a few from catalogs 1-3. Thinking about adding e few more. Although these are not for sale I thought some would enjoy seeing them. I was asked why I didn't put these in order so I decided to oblige. Some of them are personalized. I will list the names on the cues. Top cue is a Meucci.

I have added a couple of more Palmers to my group, nothing fancy. I have also put a new wrap on the model #1. From the 1st catalog I added a #7 & #8 (both blue). The #7 is longer. The butt is 30". From the second catalog I added 2 model 'B'. Third I added a Szamboti Bicentennial.
Thanks for viewing.

To B or not to B

Here are a few of my Palmer Second Catalog Model B cues.

What is interesting to collectors is that the black Model B was manufactured in 1975. That is a fact because it is a Palmer I ordered new. So it was actually produced after the Second Catalog line was replaced.

The Model B with the gold and black butt I assume was produced when the Second Catalog line was current as the font on the foil is the earlier Broadway style font.

And the Silver/Black butt Model B was most likely made when the 3rd catalog was in full swing since the shaft for this cue has the short shoulder as well as the Hobo font used on the foil.

However recent observations on some other Palmers, specifically Brunswick Palmers make me wonder whether Palmer continued to use the Broadway font for some time. I don't have an answer, but maybe those with more knowledge can offer some definitive information.

Refinish

Thanks. The black Model B has been rewrapped twice, but never refinished. The Turquoise B amd the Blue B are refinished and rewrapped.

I suppose the gold B and the silver B could have been rewrapped at some point in their history but if so, it was a long time ago. I find it interesting that they have linen wraps which is possible that they were delivered that way from Palmer. I prefer the dacron wraps on these level Palmers but I would not rewrap either of these to meet my preference.

More of the Alphabet

J K L M

Thanks to a generous offering from fellow AZ'r Dan Spooner, I was finally able to acquire that elusive Model J. The J is one of my favorite Palmer cues and this one is personalized which is an aspect of these cues I find interesting and desirable.

The Model K I acquired a year ago from the original owner in Florida. It came with two original shafts and a period Brunswick Case. The Model K is also one my favorite Palmer designs and one I was excited to acquire.

The L I acquired about 9 years ago when the market was red hot. It is a great player. This cue is also personalized and also came with a leather Brunswick period case.

And that M, the one Mr Balner, Sr. personally ran through the bandsaw, what a sweet cue. These senior Palmers are great players. I like a heavy cue and these just suit my playing style.

Alphabet soup. What grand traditional cues the Balners created.

Palmer #6, Model B, Bicentennial Szamboti

Recent Palmer Cues I have acquired. An early #6 with MOP rings on the butt sleeve, a short joint pin and rings on the collars I have not seen before. A Model B and a Palmer Bicentennial with a Szamboti forearm.

Chris,
Attached is an email correspondence From Barry Szamboti.:

would it be possible to receive a letter from you concerning this cue?
It would be greatly appreciated.
I would be more than happy to pay you for your trouble.
Thanks,

Hi Rick,
I can tell you that your prong is a Bicentennial blank that Dad sold to Palmer in Nov. 1975.
I don't write letters for any CUE other than a Szamboti and I am cutting down on that.
I hope this helps you,

Barry Szamboti

Thanks for the compliments guys. Just wanted to share that although I enjoy collecting Palmers, I don't play with them - I find the butt too fat and heavy. So, the obvious solution was to make my own rendition. Like many of their models based on house cue conversions, so is mine but I used a purpleheart blank. The joint collar is brass, acrylic rings, acrylic butt sleeve ringwork and clear window and a delrin butt cap. I also like a 3/8x10 pin and used a brass one to match the joint. Enjoy!
