hi all, after checking on many production cue's, ive finally almost descided to get me a custom shrugs cue (thx to the help of snapshot9).

has anyone had cues made by him?

how to they hit, feel, balance point etc? i trust snapshot9 but id like some more opinions before i invest my hard earned money into it. this is gonna be my first cue, and id really like it to be perfect or close to perfect.

I never heard of Shrugs. Are you sure you don't mean Scruggs? If you mean Scruggs, I've never heard any complaints.

It could be argued that Tim Scruggs is one of the best cue makers in the world.

Safe bet on his product.

Scruggs

You can't miss with a cue from Tim Scruggs. My main playing cue is a Scruggs that I've had since 1984. I have also owned several others over the years and have played with many more. Haven't found any that don't hit very nicely. Most of the ones I've had in my hands are slightly forward balanced and the butts tend to be a slightly larger diameter than most other cues.

If you call Tim directly there's a chance he'll have a cue ready to go that would fill the bill. If you want one made, that'll take quite some time. Also there are many used Scruggs cues out there. Good luck with your search.

oops :p

its shurtz... no scrugz. i cant afford those i think. damn these names are hard to remember. but hey , they dont call me silly solly for something

http://www.shurtzcue.com/ here is his page, but not much on it. snapshot gave me alot of info already, but id like a 2d opinion. his cues look really pro.

here are some pics he sended me as en example of my looks i like.

Hard to remember? I am having trouble trying to figure out how to pronounce Solartje ;) The guy that makes Shurtz cues is Gabe Owens' dad. I have not heard what the cues are like, one way or the other. The prices seem reasonable though.

hehe solartje is dutch, and in fact the TJE, is something u add to a word to tell it is small/short/cute (the last part is the one im using :p ).

BUT everyone (non dutch) usually calls me Solly, or silly solly, or sally (my salamander adiction) solly or any nice combination

example: if u where cute or small, ud be named refugeetje

i know its gabe's owens dad, and it seems they hit like ALOT more expensive custom cue's. the price is one of the reasons why im opting for letting him make me one. i cant afford anything else, and playing national finals i really need a good playing cue. and in that price range, i dont think alot of production cue's come close to the quality of his cue's, and if they do... well i find them BUTT ugly. (but then again, ive got weird taste..)

so really no one exept snapshot who ever played with one?

Hey Solly,

I'm still sorry about how those buttheads at the tournament treated you. Before you order the cue find your favorite bar cue and ask the owner what kind of tip he has on it, if you don't already have a preference. Maybe Mr. Owen can do something about having that type tip installed. By the way Gabe Owens mom posts here her screen name is gabesmom. Oh and see if you can get the cue with the birdseye on the forearm and butt and the heavier wood for the handle.

These yahoos...

Bob Owen of Shurtz makes a very nice hitting cue. I have bought and sold several of his cues. I bought one locally and sent it for him to refinish and make an additional shaft.

He was professional and a heck of nice guy. I agree, his prices are on the low side for the quality of work.

I have had good luck on the resell market but because Bob is in Tulsa, or thereabouts he isnt well known on the East Coast.

I think Andy Gilbert is underpriced too.

I have had several Tim Scruggs cues as well, the quality is excellent but I think he is overpriced some and your paying for the name and resell, which would be better than the Gilberts or Shurtz.

For cue value, the Shurtz would be very good.

Is in Wichita as is Shurtz Custom Cues. Bob is the cuemaker and a partner
in Shurtz. Not everyone knows this, but Verl Horn (OKC) was the one that taught Jack Shurtz first how to make cues.

Hi terry,

ok thx for the advice. as im not planning on selling this cue, unless it becomes totally broken. (used the same cue for 10 years when i started snooker and still use/have it) im not a collectioner (yet :D )

about asking what tip the barowner used  u must be joking right?
he doesnt even know the brand of tables he uses, or what size it is. remember, im training in a karaoke barr that has 6 tables in the back.
if i wanted a tip, id probably just take it off and take it home. but ill just start with a mori med and see from there... if i want it harder, softer.

ps i dont know the difference between the different woods :s i was thinking of using the same wood all over the butt, curley maple dark stained. is using 2 different wood types like u said better for the balance? or u just said this because of the picture i uploaded?

Ken_4fun: nice to hear more positive things from happy shrugz users.

snapshot9: guess its not over yet :) now i need to find a cheap replacement cue till bob finishes mine. a used 40$ cue or something. or maybe better to me just go to some local halls and see what they have for sale here. ive seen some 40$-80$ cues that looked cool.

edit: is there any good post or website, where they explain the different woodtypes? i think i like cocobole alot. as they usually are very dark, but when i emailed bob a picture of the color of wood i liked; he said it was a dark stained curley maple. now is there any place where i can see all the different woord and stains (on a cue if possible) so i can make the right choice? is cocobole one of those expensive superextra....somthing endangeroud wood spieces that cost tons?

HHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Mike just now saw it LMAO

Sorry...just dying laughing here.

That was funny, I made the comment before about that avatar: I now know where to hide when the rains come.

ps i cant descide on some things...

first the wood:

cocobolo or cinnamon stained curly map. the problem is , on every cue i check that uses it, the colour is so different, its hard to know what colour it has exactly. im really more for the dark red-brown look. can u achieve the same color with both woods? and its just the wood pattern that is different?

i had the impression cocobolo is more redish.

also does a custom cue with mexican cocobolo cost alot more then one with stained curly maple?

second the wrap:
i was thinking of a black wrap with white (or maybe a darker color specks).
can u descide on how many specks the wrap has?
can u chose for a black/dark grey speck or pure black wrap? i supose they exist?

Solly,

You need to check with the cuemaker about cost of cocobolo and about the wrap. You can get 1)no wrap, same wood 2)no wrap different wood 3) linen wrap 4) leather wrap 5)exotic wrap (lizard, etc). Linen wraps are available with solid, speck and double speck which is what I think you're asking. You need to check with the cuemaker about that since they may not have double speck on hand.

Terry

ok i will do so.

hope the cuemaker doesnt becomes crazy.

for now i have 2 idea's.

mahony red stained curly maple with a dubble pressed complete black linnen wrap

or a cocobole butt with black and red specks or a lisard wrap. but as im a lisard freak, id hate to know that they have killed a poor litttle lisard to make a cue. :(

*goes off to save all the lisards of the world*
