Shy but wants to play

Chee.........I have one thread on this whole board, and you gotta c*nt it up, eh Tramp?;)

I absolutely cannot wait to play tomorrow! I got in some good practice late tonight, and I just love the Diamond Pro Am tables! The pockets are tight, the balls are shiny and clean, I have a new tip on my cue and we're singing the same song.......it moves the way I want it to move.....and I'm full of positive vibes!

Pool buddy Gene won the first two brackets and lost the third, so he went to the losers side for Mens Senior Singles. The competition is tough, and we both thrive on that.

I watched Glenn Atwell play tonight (I actually sat next to his chair and he said hello, I'm surprised he remembered me from last summer's tournament at KC Midway when I met him). He's a marvel. What a joy to watch him play! You go, Glenn, kick some butt. :bow-down:

And Rich Gieler is fun to watch, also. He's smooth and quick and such a snappy dresser! I'd love to see a match between Glenn and Rich. Popcorn anyone?

Yeah. That's the way Tramp is. He'll do it every time. Now let's see. You used an asterisk to substitute for a vowel in that one word of yours. The
vowels are: A,E,I,O, and U. So the word must be: can't, cent, cint, cont,
or cu.....Oh! I see. Shocking. You must remember ,skiergirl, that the Forum is available to a family audience. :poke:

That's a new one on me. :rotflmao1: Good one, Bonnie.
If I may make a suggestion, try spending some time (if you are able to) on the big tables. It will do wonders for your stroke, and I'll wager your shot making percentage will improve when you're back on the seven footers. :)

I play on 9 footers occassionally. :)

Here's how it went:

Got a Bye the first round. Next round, played a lady who's been at it for 35 years. Won one game, lost 5, she went on and I went to the loser bracket.

Next match.......it was close.......I won 5-4. We were having fun!

Last match.......never got a game, lost 5-0. She was also a lifelong player.

I think I should have gone into the novice matches instead of Senior Singles. I may have fared much better. Live and learn.

I had a lot of fun, watched some AWESOME shooters, learned a lot, and did I mention I had fun?

Congratulations. Going and playing is worth it, especially for us newer players. You'll only get better as a result!

All I wanted this morning was to sleep in till 10....breakfast by the ocean, then leave for home at noon.

We got a phone call at 4:20 am.........Tsunami Warning......go to higher ground by 7 am.....:yikes:

So we get up, turn on the tv, see devastation in Japan (vibes going out to all the people there), and wonder what will happen to us. When it didn't hit Hawaii, we were gonna stay in, but management came and opened our door (I was walking around starkers!!!!!), told us to pack up and leave the door open when we left, and shooed us out. Trucks were running down the beach with lights flashing and the PA system barking to seek higher ground.

We went down to the casino where the pool tournament was going on, and they were still open. It's very very near the beach. So we sat in the car a reasonable distance from harm and watched a few largish waves come in and they didn't even hit the grassy cliffs, so we went home.

I wonder what happened when we left? I haven't checked the news.

I've been lax in reporting scores, I just shot lousy this last week. I'm really tired for some reason. Spring thaw will do that.;)

Monday's BCA (which is over in 2 more weeks) against the first place team:

Game 1: ZERO. I played Joe, break and run.
Game 2: 7 balls (choked on the 8)
Game 3: 1 ball (and lucky to get that!)
Game 4: 6 balls

Okay, I tried it. I don't like APA at all and I won't do this again. You just sit there for hours and wait to play 2 games for your $6 weekly fee and watch your opponent slop them in and win. I got a great break (for stripes).......balls all over the table.......but I was unlucky and a solid went in, meaning I am forced to take solids AND THERE IS NO SHOT ON SOLIDS ON THE TABLE AT ALL. Grrrr. Stripes are all in the open, some hangers even, with some solids grouped around the 8 ball and no clear shot at anything. Lost that game, then lost the next for damn near the same reason. No excuse, I know...but I am not a fan of APA.

Luck has a place in pool, but not this way.

I won't be reporting APA scores tomorrow (if ya'll give 3 hoots) because I'll be on a road trip from WA to IA.

Last night's BCA was a great time!

Game 1: 7 balls
Game 2: 7 balls (missed the 8, grrr, bad leave on my part)
Game 3: WON (more later, sorry Chris, gotta boast and brag:o)
Game 4: 5 balls

Well, I finally beat Chris White, the guy I admire most in league play, the guy who has a 76% ratio of win/loss, the guy who makes a jump shot Efren-style with ease. :bow-down:

I had told him in practice that I was gonna kick his ass tonight, and I think my positive attitude (coupled with his post-Lincoln City decompression, tee hee) made a squeaky win for me. I'm ecstatic and have renewed hope that I'm possibly doing something right.;)

I hope I have similar luck in APA tonight, although we're going to a place that has piped in Country Music........that might just kill any hope I have at all of winning anything. It's the current country stuff, and it makes me cringe. Give me Waylon, Willie and the boys, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins........hell, you can even throw in some Ernest Tubb.......I can tolerate and even enjoy some of them. But these new guys make me wanna vomit after a minute or two of the same pablum of songs.:boring:

So I'm thinking I'll stay outside in the rain until I'm called. I prefer it that way.

LOL, yeah, I used to call that "APA Jail".

I have argued against this rule in APA for years. It has to be the stupidest rule they ever came up with, and I still don't understand why. They have never given a reason for it, and there are countless reasons against it, as evidenced by your post.

Steve

The reason for that rule is to piss people off enough so that they'll never want to play this league ever again. It worked for me.....I'm so out.

Bonnie all I shoot is APA, 8 and 9 ball. I've had maybe 6 or 7 slop shots this year. That's 8 and 9 ball. I have a decent bank game going. I bank better than I can cut. Anyhoo In my first 8 ball match last night I had a shot on the 8. Ball abot 10" from the left corner just off the head rail. The cue was about 2" from the rail a foot up from the same corner on the foot rail. I marked the pocket I'm shooting from. Gave the cue ball a solid stroke and about a 1/2 ball hit. And drove the 8 straight into the corner right where I marked it.

As you can guess all kinda hooting and hollering. All kinds of accusations of "you are'nt a 3", yada, yada. I just turned to the naysayers and said "not luck,SKILL". I made several cross table banks and some table length banks. Missed some simple cuts too. That's why I'm a 3. And I usually get spotted against the opposite's solid 4's or a 6. I kill a lot of 6's. If I can get the eye dominance issue worked out I'll be a 5 or 6 in no time. My stroke is nearly there too.

But anyway the APA is what you make of it. MY 9 ball team is a bunch of shooters. We don't slop shots in. Very rarely will you see a slop shot from any one of us. I always shoot for the pocket unless I'm trying a safety. Hell I'm one of the few in our 8 ball bracket who will shoot one. Anyhow it's all you're attitude. Shoot as well as you can. let you're ranking fall where it will and enjoy yourself. It can be a very good time with the right people.

BTW glad you're doing well. I check this thread regularly too see how well you're doing. Keep up the good work.

Oh, it's not just that, justadub. It's spending $6 to shoot 2 games......against the same person......and waiting all night to do it. I waited 3 hours tonight to play and it was over in about 15 minutes. I won both games too easily (I am definitely not a 3, but how do I change that? I can't.) It's just not worth it.

Even if I got better, it's not worth the wait, and I find it frustrating. I enjoy BCA, and I think I'll stick with that. While you only play one game per person, you play them on rotation, so you play everyone. I may never play the other team members at all on APA!

And I am not fond of the opposition smiling and shooting while accidentally slopping them in. :nono:

i have followed this thread with great interest from the begining. i always liked to see how you were progressing and admired your attitude until this post and your last one stating you getting out of apa.

i dont like slop either, dont see much of it in my league except for level 2 and 3 players. when i 1st started playing apa it did frustrate me to see a player make slop and continue shooting, now i just have the attitude when they miss im goin to the table and beat them anyway.

as far as the take what you make on the break rule, i can live with that, played that way in bars for 30 years before joining bca a few years ago. sometimes you have to resort to banking or kicking when you leave yourself bad on a break.thats why i spend a few hours a week just practicing just banks and kicks, it improves your game also when you leave yourself bad after making a shot sometimes. look at it this way also, your opponent is faced with the same rule. they could leave themself the same way you did an try a shot and scratch, giving you the opportunity to make all the hangers just sitting there. hope you continue improving and hope you stay in apa also, but you know what they say , different strokes for different folks.

Once you've arrived at your deserved skill level , matches WILL take much longer , and you'll get PLENTY of table time . . . a pair of s/l 6s (or s/l7s,cuz they drop 2 games) going hill-hill in a race to 5 , shoot 9 racks - if they go to a safety war , this can take well over an hour . . . .
That'll give you your $6 worth !

I won both games too easily (I am definitely not a 3, but how do I change that ? I can't )

The captain of your new team won't like it , because he recruited you with hopes of having a low s/l player , but any APA player with integrity , who feels that they are shooting at a skill level below their true ability , need only approach their local L.O. and ask that their s/l be raised to reflect their true abilities . Yep , beating up on s/l 3s get's boring . . .
Remember when I advised you to try your speed against some 5s & 6s early on to get a feel for your true ability ?

plus , you mentioned that this team is already qualified for LTC - where you will be shooting in front of the L.O. & the local handicap committee (if your region has one ) . You may enter that event as an s/l3 , but I'll bet your exit s/l is higher ! (and your captain might not like it , but you COULD raise your s/l on the certification sheet before the event ! )
And I am not fond of the opposition smiling and shooting while accidentally slopping them in. :nono:

Once you are shooting against higher - skilled players , this becomes WAY less frequent - players with the ability to run out seldom rely on slop !

Funny , I find myself actually defending the APA - there's a switch ! Perhaps , though , before giving up on the league completely , you should try the same approach that you took with BCA - start your own team for a session , so that you can feel secure in declaring your own handicap , and you can decide which match you will shoot in that night .
You'll get the same feeling of satisfaction taking games away from APA 6s& 7s as you do in taking games away from Chris White !

Got my toes in the water , ass in the sand , not a worry in the world , a cold beer in my hand
Life is good today . . . . . .

new country ain't all bad . . . .

Just a quick reply as I drove 900+ miles today and have 700 tomorrow (going to IoWAY, oh YAY), and I'm tired......

The APA dictates your handicap/level. My pool buddy Gene hasn't played for a while and they brought him back in at the level he was at 3 years ago! No choice in this. You can't just get what you want (everyone would be a 3! haha).

There's other ways to shoot pool other than being frustrated once a week. I'm still passing. Maybe I'll try TAP, too.
