Shy but wants to play

Yes, I made it through 3 brackets at the Western BCA Regionals in Lincoln City, OR in March. My first tournament, I made it through 3 also. I won a 6'er of beer for being the last woman standing (out of 5). I do tournaments from time to time.

I seem to shoot on leagues a lot......mostly because most of the people I know are on them! I like to do tournaments, but I'm not good enough to place well in them, so it's a waste of money so far. But so is league play, when you think of it, per game.

But I do enjoy the competition at any level. I'd play Efren if it came up, and wouldn't be all squirrelly about it. I'm unflappable when I get up to the table(because I'm a mental midget and don't have the capacity to be nervous). :grin-square:

Instead of thinking of it as 'a waste of money', think of it this way....If you learn something from tournaments or league play, its not really wasting money....more of an investment.
Think...you might pick up a position shot here, a safety there, etc., and one day you might use one of those shots in a tournament to put you in the money.

I'm in the doghouse tonight. :embarrassed2:

Evidently, after the playoffs I was moved up to an sl/4. That's okay with me, but it sure messes up our team.:crying: As this is a new season, and we have new players, it will yet be determined how it shakes out. I don't think anyone of us is a 3 now, and we have 5's, 6's, and 4's only. It will be tough to stay under 23.

And City Cup? Well, it's not this weekend, but next weekend (June 10-12). We'll see how it rolls.

Tonight I played an sl/3. He needed 2 games to my 3. I lost the first one by giving ball in hand when I couldn't get out of a bind the last ball. No shot, nothing to be done about it.

The second game ended quickly when he broke and left all the balls mostly still in rack formation. I had a chance to break all of mine out and miscalculated where the 8 ball would go. I made 2 of my balls, but the 8 knicked another ball and went in. Loss!

Our team had already won 3 of 5 matches, so it wasn't necessary to take another win. And he was really happy for the win, so it's all good.

Next week I have Monday and Tuesday leagues. I sure wish BCA season would roll around again. Hurry September!!

Ah, well... stuff happens.

As for that "going up" issue. It was only a matter of time, definitely a matter of "when", not "if". Yes, that does make it more interesting for your team now. Our team will face a similar dilemma at some point this session, as we have two players that will undoubtedly go up, as well. (We simply aren't playing them in our weekly matches until states, to eliminate the possibility of it happening before-hand. Methinks your captain should have done this with you, as well...)

Personally, I say congratulations. Not on the loss, of course, but on the higher Skill Level. Best of luck in your big tourney.

Ball in hand no shot

Was hitting one of opponent's balls to a difficult position (blocked by another ball, touching or near another ball) an option? Still a ball in hand foul, but may have gotten you back to the table....

Good plan, JCMn. The way the table looked, he was all out in the open, and it would have been very difficult to snooker him from any spot. I have no problem doing that, or hitting the opponent's ball on purpose to try and bunch him up when there is no other recourse.

My teammate did just that maneuver in one game. Here's the layout, he was solids with no shot on his (kind of my situation):

CueTable Help

He shot the 12 into the clump, it broke out both his balls and the 8, gave his opponent ball in hand. He was playing a new 3, and got the table back quickly. All situations are different. It worked out for him.

At the risk of the certain few chanting, "Neener neener neener", I'm now officially INSANE.

I picked up a BCA 9 ball league on Sunday night.

:groucho:

So the schedule for the summer is:

Sunday.....BCA 9 ball
Monday.....APA 8 ball
Tuesday....APA 8 ball

This week's schedule is a killer (but what a way to go!):

SUN-MON-TUE, league play.
FRI-SAT-SUN, 8 ball City Cup playoffs (9 ball league that night)
MON-TUE, league play.

In between, practice, and I always play for fun all day/night Thursday. Hump Day is always open.

I don't think that's enough pool.... do you?

Don't let anybody put you "in the doghouse" cuz your s/l went up ~ I'm sure they saw you play before they asked you to join , knew your actual skills were better than that , and they SHOULD have anticipated it . 5,5,5,4,4 is a strong roster - hard to beat most nights (if matched properly . . . ) , so be comfortable with that.

As far as tournaments , I'll say it again:deadhorse:
APA singles - especially 9ball singles - offer a great chance for the lower-handicapped players . They are bracketed by skill level , so you DO have the skills to be very competitive in these tournaments. Try these , and if your team does make it to Vegas , be sure to try your hand at some of the minis there , too . (even if your team DOESN't make it to Vegas , it's worthwhile just for the minis )

No, they didn't see me play before we got on their team. They told the bartender they needed a couple of people, and our name was sent on to them because we left word we wanted to play. We went in as totally unknown. We had to ask when we got there the first night where they were!

There are family members living in LV, so we have free bunking. We may just go. Too bad it's Vegas in AUGUST........hell for me.:(

I wish i was able to get out that often ..

Right now I am only playing Thrusday nights till September.. Then the fun start as over again :-)

Since your first post, I am thinking that you are really enjoying yourself.. Keep up the good work :-)

One night a week? What is more important on the other nights? A couple of hours practice even once a week is going to make an improvement on your game.

I find the time. I find pool relaxing, enjoyable, addictive and when I feel lousy, all I need to do is shoot some pool, and I feel better again.

It's my Medicine for Good Health at 50 cents a game....a Great Value!

Okay, first night of APA 8 ball on another 'blind' team. There is a 7, a 5, (3) 4's, and a 3. Since I'm a 4, I didn't get to play.

In practice, the other 4 I was shooting had this shot....she was solids, shooting at the 3.

CueTable Help

When she shot, she took her left hand and deliberately swept the 2 away from the 8 and it rolled out about 8 inches into the middle of the table. She missed the 3, making it my turn. I just stood there, silent. When it was obvious she wasn't going to do anything, I said, "Aren't you going to put the 2 back where it was?"

She replied, "No, I don't think so."
Well, that's one way to break up a cluster!!!
:angry::angry::angry:

The other team only had 3 members show up. That's okay, said our team captain. We usually just let them keep playing and some play double.

:angry::angry::angry:

What kind of shit is that?? Only play your best 3 each week? FOUL!!!

Interesting league you play in.... With stuff like that, I can see how leagues (and APA) get a bad name.

sheesh

I'm hoping it's only that one league. Our team on Tuesdays is much different.

My team had to throw second, so they threw me. They threw a 2 at me. I thought he shot like a 3. I had to win 4 games to his 2.

Game 1: Won
Game 2: Lost (scratched on the 8)
Game 3: Won
Game 4: Won
Game 5: Won

It wasn't much of a challenge, but the room was hot and stuffy, and I itched everywhere and thought I'd pass out from lack of cool air.

I'm ready for City Cup. Bring it!

Get used to it.

I'm only speaking from my experience, so take it for what its worth:

And I stress that this is NOT knocking the league itself.

This kind of thing seems to happen alot in APA. Now, I'm 3000 miles away from you and I dont know how things go out there as far as leagues, but around here, APA leagues are cutthroat. You have to keep one eye on the table and another in the rule book.

If your bylaws state you can do so, since she "accidentally" hit the 2 with her hand, you would have the option of moving it back to where it was. You can also leave it where it lies, whatever is most beneficial to you.
It is also not uncommon for teams to forfeit a game or 2 just to play the highest skilled players. Alot of these teams have the 'win at all costs' mentality. It really takes the fun out of what is supposed to be a 'fun night out'.

I had an incident tonight as a matter of fact during our APA 9-ball league where the other team tried to call a foul on me for breaking with a break stick, then switching to my shooter. They even went as far as to call the LO for a ruling. Afterwards, the guy I was shooting (SL4) went to the bathroom 5 times in the hour it took us to shoot our match. Of course, I got lucky to beat him (75-8). :D

Gotta love those kinds of games, no matter what league youre in!

Doesn't matter what the local bylaws state , the NATIONAL rule in the event of "accidental" contact with an object ball gives the non-offending player (that's you) the RESPONSIBILITY of returning the ball to where "they believe" the ball to have been before the contact occurred. It's not her option , it's your job !
Walk up to the table , pick it up , and put it back . Simple. Problem solved
