Mike Sigel has won down in Sunny Land !!!

I have to beleive that Mike Sigel is one or not the best players that will ever be. After 10 years and coming back to win this major tournament is a big feat.

I watched him in a tournament in the 80s and he was playing a friend of mine. My friend got one shot in nine games and that was a kick. And beleive me...my friend was no joke of a player himself.

I have been playing and watching pool for 20 years and I have 3 heros that have really earned my respect....Mike Sigel, Nick Varner and Dale Perry. Strickland would also be on my list if he were not such a ASS !!!

I really hope that Sigel goes far in his comeback !!!:)

No question about it, Mike is the man.

one nice thing about comparing today's players with yesterday's, and MS is certainly no old-timer, is that there is continuity in pool. you still have competitive older players playing well today. and pool doesn't depend on athleticism to where one can say that it makes any difference in performances today versus 30 years ago.
although i think stamina helps.

maybe mike will show these younger guys what it's all about.

Yup, I agree. He showed them older guys, and now let's see how well he does against the younger guys. Great to see him back!

I will tell you, he won beating Hall in a come back effort. Any time you see Sigel in a final, bet the ranch on him, he wins every time.
Note the abuse of Mr. Sigel is not on az, it is on ccb which is their shame.

Mike Sigel: On November 1999, billiard digest ranked the top 100 greatest players and Mike Sigel was # 5 on the list. Some quotes from that article. Not since Willie Mosconi in the 40's had a player so dominated a decade as Mike did the 80's. He was know as Mr. final. He won 85 of 95 tourneys in which he reached the final match. He is the greatest living player alive today. He was the master of straight pool and 9 ball. He has won one pocket tourneys and over 100 tournaments overall.

At age 19 he ran 339 balls. He won his first world 14.1 title at age 27 in 1979 and won again in 81 & 87. At the 89 US Open he went 150 and out on Jim Rempe. At the 92 US Open he went 150 and out on Mike Zuglan from the break. The one inning out remains a US Open record and was perhaps the most perfect 150 run every recorded on film. Steve Mizerak seeing it said Mike is the greatest player on earth. When 9 ball took over Mike won more 9 ball titles, 27 in the 1980's than any other player.

There are a lot of new players on the boards who are not aware of the position Mr. Sigel holds in the game. Those who have said some unkind things about him IMHO should read the above and then show our greatest player alive today more respect.

Mike Sigel is naturally right handed - he only plays pool left handed to give the other guys half a chance.

FL - BCA handbook also shows that only three other players have gone 150 and out in tournament play. Irving Crane, Johnny Archer, and Rodney "Babe" Thompson.

That is quite an accomplishment to do it once, but to do it twice is really extraordinary.

How will he fare against the younger players? Hopefully we will find out very shortly.

Maybe they will have a new award for Mike - comeback player of the year.

Who knows, he may inspire Jean Balukas to come back too.

The fact that Mike Sigel has come out of "retirement" to win the big Seniors Tournament in Florida is an encouraging sign that pool may be on the upswing, i.e., Seminole Tribe of Florida tournaments, higher payouts, bigger and better opportunities. He is a smart businessman.

Mike Sigel actively playing pool can only benefit the sport. If Jean Balukas returned to the pool scene, it would be the icing on the cake.

Hello,

I am new to this board, but I wanted to comment on Sigel. I have been playing for about 14 years and following for many many years before that. I have always admired Mike Sigel for his great play. I know some of the stuff said about im here and on other boards, but the fact remains he is one of the greatest players of our generation.

I've always believed that a competitor must have some sort of arrogance to compeat, though Mr. Sigel may have more than others, that's OK with me, he wins more than others.

I am a big autograph collector, and the $50 Mr Sigel charges is about in line with other sports. I've paid to meet pro baseball and football players and don't have a problem with that, their time has to be worth something. So if Mr Sigel wishes to charge for his autograph then so be it, if you want it, pay it, if you don't then don't. It's called capitalism, your choice and his, if the two meet then all the better. No reason to complain for a man trying to make a living off his greatness in his sport.

Just my opinion FWIW,

Jim

Cigar Aficionado did a good article on Mike Sigel:

They also did an article on Blatts Billiards:

I thought the article on Sigel was better, probably because it was done by a sports writer. The Blatts article was run under the indulgences section and reads like a plug for status-hound parlor accessories. It's still an interesting read.
