My buddy just aquired a signed helmstetter, #19 of 21 made. The finish is beat, and the wrap needs replacing.
Question 1: Is it worth refinishing?

Question 2: Who would be the best person to refinish it to keep any collectable value?

Question 3: What is an approx. value? It has 2 straight shafts w/matching ringwork. I couldn't find anything on the net, or in the blue book.

Question 4: Any idea as to the original wrap type and color? He wants it done, but wants to keep it as original as possible.

HI DAVE; I knew that I sold a cue like that & finally found a pic. Unfotunatly I don't have a lot of info. It was part of a 20 cue model set that Dick Helmstetter made in limited quanities. It came with 2 shafts & Ivory ferrules. The original wrap was white/black spot linen. I wrote $450 on the photo. I think that was the retail price...JER
 
Dave, the cue is definitely worth restoration and I'm half tempted to offer my services.
It's a very nice cue and would make an exciting & worthy challenge.
Unfortunately, I've got Sey-work to the ceiling and am a year behind on my builds.
Taking on anything more now would be just shooting myself in the foot.
I'm going to suggest that you let Ryan see this, which probably won't be before Monday morn.
If he'd take the job, he'd certainly do a resto worthy of this cue.

I think KJ is right on with ratcues and if he can't get to it try Scott Sherbine at Profiecent Billiards, these are really good old cues.--Leonard
 
Thanks guys for the responses and PM's. I've been busy this weekend at regionals(APA) so I apologize for the late response. Right now, the owner doesn't have the money to restore, but does want a rewrap. A re-finish will be down the road. He's not looking to sell, he just wants to make sure that the refurbishing is within the value of the cue. He got it for a really great deal, and he's not a collector so.....
I have heard this weekend that Helmstetter did these types of cues in batches of 25 or 50, so how would one get a cue with 19 / of 21?

You've read one version and you've heard another.
It's possible that both are correct to an extent.
However, when it says 19 of 21, you can take it to the bank
that there were only 21 of this particular model made for sale.
For the most part.
