There have been questions lately regarding picture size posting. This discusses a simple experiment I tried to see approximately what size picture would be accepted. The old forum software requested the JPG to be 200 MB or smaller.
I began with an image I knew would not load. It's a picture of Ross Fountain in Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I took the shot in August 2011 using a Nikon D7000. The picture is in raw mode (Nikon Electronic Format or NEF). I imported it into Photoshop and saved it out as a JPG saving it as lossless as you can save a JPG. I then saved nine iterations, always beginning with the original JPG, and reduced the size by 10% each time. Finally, at 30%, it accepted the picture. I then tried 35% and that posting was rejected.
Below is the table of file sizes I tried. The old system would have taken the 10% size but not any bigger, so now the system accepts file sizes about three times bigger. The picture reduced to 30% of original size follows.
PS: If I wanted to actually post the picture for viewing purposes, I would post a smaller version. I also almost put this in NPR, but since it's not about politics, I figured it would be rejected.
