I'd like to see more of these.
Nobody's wasting their weekend time, your either in or your out.
The pros are doing it in the Philippines right now.
One day events work for the workin'/playing man.
They are good for the room owner, weekends Not Locked Up.
No hotel needed.
And tables will Open up for play to the public in the pm.

I could see this possibly being a good thing in cities where there is a strong pool community where you would have a good sized turnout for tournaments.

That said, I play at Skinny Bob's most often and I probably wouldn't play in a single elimination unless it was capped by Fargo. I would get destroyed in an open event because there are a lot of great players in the area. Hell, I'm pretty sure one of the leagues I play in averages about 500 Fargo or so.

Another factor for me is luck of the draw. You could draw the best player in the field and be out in the first round. I've had this happen before in a single elim tournament. Dude broke and ran 6 racks and then 3 fouled me. I got to shoot twice. Was not fun. Double elim gives you at least one more opportunity to win.

Regardless of my opinion, I'm for just about anything that gets more people to play pool.

I like a format with a group stage with a round robin, so you get to play more than one match and then first (and second, depends on size of the field) move to stage two of SE.

Just SE or DE is too brutal in my opinion, especially for the dead money players that you want and need for higher prize money.

SE is good for an invitational events where you have a small field of players of the same level and chance to win, like top 32 FargoRate players.

Picture this for your Saturday.... 78 players All starting at 11am.
Each Round all players still in begin at the Same Time.
With 38 tables and 78 players there will be one Bye.
Payouts with $40 entry
1st $650
2nd $450
3rd $360
4th $300
5th $240

Single Elimination tournaments are a quick and fun way of doing things. For your average pool player, it would have to be handicapped as it would scare a lot of them away. Although if you came up to me and told me it's only $20, I would jump on that.

What the pros are doing this week is very interesting though as a lot of them went ahead and played. What exactly was the entry fee btw? I only ask because I was surprised to see so many players actually wanting to do this single elimination format.

Fine for pros, not so much for joes. DE has been the standard for eons so why mess with it? SE is ok for really good players imo but that's it. For average players a SE event would need to be h'capped/cheap/fast.
