I have great respect for SJM based on the content of his posts. To think that the absolute number of ports has anything to do with respect is absurd. As irrefutable evidence I will simply ask you to check how many posts snapshot9 has made.

Before you accuse me of being "absurd," let me respectfully suggest that you read my initial post on this topic: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=47719

BTW, I believe if you compute a correlation coefficient between member rank on reputation and total number of posts, you will find that the correlation is significant at the .05 level of confidence. So really, it's not so absurd after all. While there are surely many examples of posters with a large number of low quality posts (and, conversely, posters with a small number of high quality posts, probably because they are relatively new posters), the ten posters ranked highest in rep points all have over 1,000 posts.

And anyway, this is about sjm and congratulating him on his contributions to this forum. It really shouldn't be about you and me and our apparently divergent views about what constitutes absurdity.:)

So an engineer, a agro, and a statistician walk into a job interview. There is only one question, "what is 2 plus 2". The engineer answers "4.0". The agro says "somewhere between 3 and 5". The statistician asks "what would you like it to be ?".

My point in referencing that earlier post was to point out that I appreciated the quality of sjm's posts, not just the quantity. You seemd to have the idea that I was making a big deal out of 5,000 posts just becasue, as you said, of the "absolute quantity" of posts.

I guess you missed my point here. Let me restate it. I believe the likelihood of a person having lots of respect and lots of rep points is significantly hgher if you sample from the members who are within the TOP 10% in terms of number of posts than if you sample from members among the BOTTOM 10% in terms of number of posts. Doesn't that seem reasonable to you? It seems so clear to me that it really isn't worth much more comment regardless of your response or lack of same. Have a great day!
