One of the great moments of this or any other year is my trip to Vegas in May for the BCA extravaganza. This is the seventeenth one I’ve been to, but it never gets old.
Just spent a few days at the Riviera and caught up with many old friends, business colleagues, and have met some new people, too.
Of my WPBA friends, I caught up with Kim White, Cristina De La Garza, Allison Fisher, Kelly Fisher, Brittany Bryant, Karen Corr, Megan Smith, Morgan Steinman, Cathy Metzinger, Val Finnie, Melissa Little, Emily Duddy, Ming Ng and a few others. Of my male professional friends, I caught up with Tony Robles, Mika Immonen, Ralf Souquet, John Schmidt, Oliver Ortmann, Stevie Moore, Johnny Archer, Dennis Orcullo and a few others.
On the AZB front, I finally did have the pleasure of meeting Melinda, AKATrigger in these parts. Oddly enough, I had not recognized her despite the fact that we had sat at the same table in the casino briefly, but when I saw she knew Mike Howerton, I asked someone else who she was, and once advised, I made a point of catching up with her later on. Just as she is on the forum, she’s delightful in person. Also met Borana Andoni, who I’ve seen numerous times at NYC poolrooms but have never been introduced to before, and she was warm and friendly. I also spent some time with Jay Helfert, GG11, Marop, SunnyDay, and very briefly caught up with the understandably busy Mark Griffin.
Also ran into to more than a few buddies from the NYC pool scene, and that’s always a treat.
The World Pool Masters was amazing, and the bigger field has brought the event to an entirely new and decidedly higher level. The level of play was phenomenal, and Dennis Orcullo’s play was textbook in his impressive march to victory. Dennis must like Vegas a lot, given that this is his third title won at the Riviera including a win in the final over Shane Van Boening in the 2007 BCA event and his win over Ralf Souquet in the final of the 2009 Predator 10-ball event.
Ah yes, this is the life.
The only downer for me is that by being here, I’m missing my 30th college reunion (on the very outside chance that any other member of the 1980 University of Pennsylvania graduating class posts here, please PM me). Hey, you can’t have it all.
