SJM vs TheOne at Corner Billiards

Wow, I took a serious beating tonight, as TheOne took his game into overdrive and ran balls like crazy. Here's how it went:

Game 1
TheOne opened the game with a 60 ball run and it looked like he might run the whole 100 until a somewhat brutal cross table scratch off a pretty good shot on a thirteen ball cut him short. He should have been out in three innings but missed at 97. Still, this was a blowout, with TheOne prevailing by 100 - 20. Our fellow forum poster Lewdo sweated this game.

Game 2
SJM played pretty well in this game, opening with a 22, but two innings later TheOne ran a 37 to gain the lead. Shortly thereasfter SJM ran a 37 of his own to take the lead 84 - 63, but TheOne ran 37 and out for a 100 - 84 win. A game with three 37 ball runs ---- go figure.

Game 3
SJM seemed, once again, to be fighting the good fight. TheOne ran the first 27, but SJM ran a 26 and 20 of his own, and had a modest 56 - 50 lead when he scratched off the pack on a break shot. TheOne then proceeded to run 50 and out (tried to continue his run, but only got to 55) for a 100 - 56 victory.

I've got to give credit to a very deserving opponent on this occasion. The better man won. Four runs of 37+ in a three hundred ball span speaks for itself. We had a grand old time playing. TheOne is not just a wonderful player but he's a perfect gentleman and a good sport. I'm pleased to have made a new friend through the forum.

Thanks sjm, it was a pleasure and you are a fine host. You also play pretty good yourself, especially given your lack of play in recent times. I got a few nice rolls, especially in the 9 ball and you left a few anging for me. Still upset about scratching on 60 though, sure was trying to run the 100 on ya first visit! ;-)

I am looking forward to coming back to NYC in a month or so, hopefully u can fix me up with some good games if I'm playing well enough by then.

Was also a pleasure to meet Lewdo, seemed like a very nice guy who's probably going to thrash me at chess at some point in the future!

Anyway, its Viva Las Vegas in the morning so see you there sjm and everyone else!

Oh yeah funny thing was when we left we met Mikka in the street who had just arrived for the BCA in Vegas. You gotta love NY :)

I'll be there for the re-match guys. I might throw my hat in the ring for a game to 100 if you give me about 50 start:)
 
It was quite a pleasure to meet The One and sweat the ensuing straight pool battle. SJM's presence and commentary were pleasant as ever. Both these guys got STROOOOKES!

Unfortunately, my fellow New Yorker Sjm took the beating this time! But no one could begrudge The One. A guy that runs 60 on his first inning for the day is more than well-deserving!

Look forward to seeing more of you guys, and have a super time in Vegas!
 
Thanks for the report, seems like you had one heck of a shooting frenzy there ! :) A few runs over 50 in only a few set to 100 is pretty darn good shooting ! My hat off to you both.

One suggestion for The One: even though you ran into Mika, don't play straight pool with him. The racking gets quite boring after a while... :p I think SJM can provide you an insight on this ;)

Sounds like fun. How tight were the pockets?? I need some idea so I know how monstrous my spot will need to be when we play. How do they compare to the Diamond table you've played on in Indy?? Have a good time in Vegas.

The One...I think you're going to have your hands full with this match and there's a good chance you might have a couple of marks in your LOST column.

We'll do everything we can here on AZ to promote it. Good luck......
 
Wow it sounds like TheOne was on fire, only a matter of time before he hits a 100, then the sky is the limit.

Pockets were not as tight as those pinholes you're used to, Willie. Actually, choice of table was pretty simple. When I got there, I asked which table I could take where I wouldn't be in the way of the league. Took the table they suggested. Not very scientific but it did ensure we didn't get kicked off when the league came in.

As for your spot, imagine how many you'd need from TheOne, who only began playing staight pool a

Glad we got to play in what I consider to be Manhattan's two best poolrooms.

50! As long as I can play in that hoboken open tournament you run, no handicaps I assume?

Wouldn't mind a night over their, unfortunately my host was married so didn't seem too keen! :-0

I'm sure I will DM, I'm just a novice starting out with much to learn. It wasn't a bad start hooking up with SJM though. No problem taking a few hits for the greater good :-)

I don't doubt it mj, maybe 250 no count? :-) I will play 25 just to even it up :-)

but you never know, after all I play the table - oops sorry SJM, there's a clue!

Yes, they where both very cool, just great to see a 9 ball table again after a month in my 9 ball less home town in the UK. It was even better to play on one of course!

Maybe Masters next time, then I will probably take a few beatings!

The best player at Masters is 3-cushion superstar Pedro Piedrabuena, the reigning US 3-cushion champion, who ran an absolutely phenomenal 26 last summer playing billiards in that very room.

Of course, more than a few there can light it up on the pool table, too.

Yes, but that is 8-ball so the spot would not be quite as big and it is only one a year in February thankfuly :) ... with Straight Pool I definitely need a decent spot. I play quite a bit in Amsterdam so I'd be happy to play there. The tables are also much better than in Hob.

If you do get a chance to come to Hob next time, I'll arrange a match for you with the local (ex)pro on a tight pocket table. But I think he plays 9-ball exclusively.
