lately i have been having alot of balls skidding on my table. at least a whole lot more than what one should have.

can anyone offer any reason why? sign of cloth aging? dirty balls? dirty cloth? too much chalk on the tip, perhaps?

this has never happened before, just wondering why the last couple of weeks it suddenly begins?

First ....

What cloth, and how old is it? Second, could be how you are cueing the cue ball on certain shots.

Old cloth would be the last thing I would suspect, brand new cloth
is more prone to skids.

it is typicaly due to dirt/chalk on the object ball
and what I would describe as a 'punch' stun stroke.

ie little or no follow thru

Dirty balls.
Skidding usually happens on thick hits too.
Mostly on follow shots.

Actually, from my observations, most skids occur when the cue-ball is hit with little or no spin. I can't see what cloth would have to do with it since I've seen it happen on both old and new cloth. It definitely has to do with dirty balls. Now, the question is, what makes the balls dirty? Obviously, chalk, powder and food will do it but perhaps, maybe new cloth has some residue that might be getting on the balls?

OR (and this is far more likely), when a room recloths its tables (like for a tournament), the manager/room-owner probably gets a little overzealous about ball-cleaning and ends up using a lot of cleaner and fails to effectively rinse the balls.

A high percentage of skids I see happen on soft shots. Specifically, soft shots where the cue is not accelerating through the CB (what I call 'pooch shots'). Try shortening your stroke/bridge on soft shots for starters.

Also, clean everything :D
