yes. Mike makes them, McDermott makes them and Samsara also made them. I believe there are some made in China, but not sure about that one.
is there any way to tell a original that mike built from others?
The shaft will screw on the wrap section. There is no quick release above the wrap. So you can fit the shaft on either section!!! It is a wood to wood, no brass insert. This is also true for the McDermott sledgehammer but it will have the McDermott rubber bumper and logo on it.

frankly speaking that's the first time I see those features as identifying Gulyassy's j/b. It might be like that but not limited to these IMO. As a first thing to look for I would name his patented logo.
I'm sure I own a genuine Gulyassy Sledgehammer and it has a wood to wood main joint but at the same time it has a quick release part above the wrap (oh sorry my j/b has no wrap). Meaning I can not screw the shaft onto the butt (and don't really know why should I since the cue jumps excellent as intended, with butt removed).
I'm not saying no sho is wrong but would repeat that if a cue does not meet the requirements he mentioned it still might be Gulyassy's original Sledgehammer.
