I am giving my review of my new Leon Sly Fancy Sneaky Pete.
Let me start out by saying that I am, by no means, an expert on just about anything, BUT, I have played pool for fun and competitively (locally) for over 20 years.
I have owned many of the same production cues that most of you all have, and then some more. I used to be a real cue whore.
Currently I own:
20+yr old Custom Scruggs
Tony Matthews
Old Meucci SP, that I have had converted to my specs-ferrules, tip, butt cap, etc.
A couple various J/B.

Back to the Sly..................
I could not be more pleased with this cue!!!
It is a MONSTER PLAYER!!!!!!
Someone in another review said something about the sound of a cue, especially the sound of a top professionals' cue. Well folks, this cue has that in spades!
The sound, the feel, hell.....the ACTION, is simply unreal!!!!
It's a cocobolo 4pt, with hoppe ring and butt cap. The joint is coco around phenolic around maple, with a radial pin. This joint is simply the NUTS!
You owe it to yourself to try this joint combination. It has such an incredible feel, you will be amazed.
The ferrules are micarta, I never thought I would be a fan because I always played with Ivor-x, but this material is sweet! It has Everest tips, again, I was always a fan of Triangle tips, but these Everest's are fantastic!
Here's a scenario....first time I hit with it, broke and ran 2 racks. BOOM!
Started playing a little more, had an easy corner pocket shot. Object ball was 10" from the corner, cue ball was near the side pocket, made the ball and still drew the entire length of the table, without even trying that hard. It is a phenomenal cue. WOW!!!

I am extremely impressed with the cue, as you can tell, but I am also impressed with the way Leon handles his customers. Not all cuemakers can handle that fine line between being a cuemaker and a customer service person. He does it extremely well.
He kept me informed as to the progress of my cue, almost weekly, or at least every other week. Once he was close to the final stages, he posted pictures for me to see and when it was completed, he also sent me pictures.
I am trying (lol), to post them here on this review. It's my first time, so I don't know if it'll work. If not, maybe I'll ask Leon to come behind me and post them for you all to see.
It really is pretty, IMO, and I hope you all enjoy it.

I am not a mindless drone who only buys certain things from certain folks, but I have to say, this is my first Sly cue, and this was an excellent experience from beginning to end.
Great cue. Great price. Nice guy.
I don't know about the rest of you, but that's a pretty unbeatable combination, to me. Again, just my opinion, but it's pretty tought to beat.

Thanks for your time and give Leon a try if you're in the market for something new.
You won't be disappointed.
Thanks again, Eric.

Nice cue. I bought a Sly sneaky from a fellow AZer and liked it so much, I had Sly make me another. I know what you're talking about. If I had more money, I'd have more Slys.

Wow... that's a really nice cue... one of the best SP's I've see. Excellent workmanship, that's obvious. Whose idea about the joint work? That and the ring work really make this SP stand out. What about the shafts? I see you ordered two. Type of taper? Grade of wood, ferrule material, etc,?
If you don't mind me asking, how did you contact Sly? I don't believe he has a website, so I'd like to know his approximate pricing for something comparable to yours. Also, what is the build time on something like that? Anyway, good shooting with that baby.

Thanks in advance, Eric.

Thanks for the review. That is a gorgeous cue. I have admired most of the cues he has posted on here greatly. Keep up the good work Sly!!!

WOW :eek:That cue is beautiful!!! The coco really has a nice tone. Leon is really putting out some stunning cues. Thanks for the review and sharing some photos

Sorry for the late Reply......

First, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Work sucks!

The idea for the joint came to me from another Sly that someone sold here a while back. So, who knows who thought of that joint configuration originally.....maybe Leon himself. I will tell you....that joint combination is the BOMB!!!!!
Shaft taper? I have no idea. I know, I know....there are a couple/few different styles of taper, but I have no idea the difference between the different tapers, so soory I can't answer that.
The grade of wood....??? It is fairly well aged maple with some grain to it. The ferrulles are Micarta. I never thought I would like them, but BOY...DO I EVER!!!!

I contacted Sly through here, originally. I had a problem with another cuebuilder on here that he was friendly/cordial with and I thought he might have some insight on dealing with this POS guy. Anyway, it just turned into a friendly relationship from there, where we would talk on the phone every so often. If you look him up in the pool tutor directory, it has his phone #. Heck, for that matter, you could PM him from here, he's under Leon Sly.
Pricing, well.....I think that is up to Leon and every different customer. I don't want to shoot him in the foot and tell you what he charged me, because...honestly....he cut me a little bit of a "deal" because we became friendly and he took pitty on me from getting screwed over by that other guy. That situation is between Sly and me, BUT....if memory serves, I think he told me originally that a cue like mine would be in the upper $500's to $600 range....I think...don't quote me...but I think about $600. Again, just call him or PM him, he'll be happy to quote youa price right over the phone.
Lastly, the build time. Just like all cuebuilders, I think it all depends on how much and what is on their plate at the given moment you place the order. I was fortunate, he was in the middle of a couple builds and could work on something else at the same time, so mine from start to finish was remarkably only about 8 weeks or so...maybe 10, but certainly less that 3 months from the day I said O.K. BUILD IT, and the day I picked it up.

I hope this helps.
Leon is a WONDERFUL man to deal with. I cannot say enough nice things about him and his cues.

Leon Sly

Hey thanks for taking the time in the info you dupplied in Mr. Sly. It was very helpful and it sounds like he's a nice guy to work with. And if he's as nice as your cue he made than I kno I'm in good hands. Once again, thanks for taking the time. Good shooting with that beauty. I just love the joint and ring trim. They look great and meticulasly made. here's hoping I can get something together with him.
Thnx, Dane

Contact Leon Sly

Hi Eric,
I dragged out your thread from last July because I put that cocobolo Sly sneaky pete on my "favorites" list. How's it playing after spending time with it?
The reason I posted is to get Leon's email address / phone number. I have misplaced both and I would like to give him a buzz. The last time I talked with Leon I referenced your cocobolo Sly. I still love the looks and from what you reported it plays as good as it looks. So if you got his email or phone number please post it or private message him. And of you can give us another performance report I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks man, and happy holidays,
KII
