Small 14.1 story

I got my pathetic high run of 30 balls back in June of 1994, i got it written down somewhere, lol. Anyway i got it at the cue club in Vegas where i used to play 3-4 times a week. I would play with 3-4 of the older guys as all the young guys were 9 ball crazy.
Anyway, this one guy who was in his 80,s then, used to play me a lot and he was still damm good at his age. His name was Tom Elliot and he was a nice old guy and i got my high run playing him.
The thing about it was after the game he took out his wallet and handed me this old clipping that was yellowed with age and he said read this : So i did and it was a newspaper account of Willie Mosconi defending his crown in the 40,s in Chicago and this Tom was listed as the Referee. I couldnt stop laughing, i said to him "Did you have to scold Willie at any time during the match?" He laughed and said no, but he said he would have if had reason too.
He told me a few stories which i cant remember but im sure hes gone now and how many guys like that can be still around ?
I dont know why i thought of him, but i figured it would be a good little story for this section.

Thumbs Up

Good story. I enjoyed reading it. That newspaper clip thing must be a "old timer" thing b/c Leroy Kinman had pulled out of his wallet a old newspaper article that was all folded up of him beating Pete Margo in a tournament up in Chicago back in the 60's.
That old timer must of liked you to show you that newspaper clip & to play many games of 14.1 with you. Very good.... Thanks for sharing.

Youre welcome fellas, i enjoyed writing it.

One thing im always curious about and didnt want to start a new thread about it, so here goes :
We always hear lots and lots of stories about big money 9 ball and big money one pocket, right ? How come theres never any stories from the past about big money straight pool matches ? Tournaments, yes, but money games, not so much.
Was this never a really big gambling game or was it due to the fact that it was way harder to get a game once everyone knew your speed and no one wanted to go up against you ?
