Smoking at tournament matches

Actually, they are banned just like tobacco in a lot of places. Does zero harm, but have to control peoples actions.

Where are they banned? I have never seen them banned...that would be interesting.

Joey, I agree with you. I hate when people smoke near me. I made the decision a while ago to not play pool anywhere that allows smoking inside. I'm sure I am not making a large dent in the room owner's income, but I do it for myself. I don't need to play pool badly enough to make myself miserable in that sort of environment.

Do we have to make a Federal case out of this everytime there is a thread about smoking??? I, as a smoker, have no problem with waiting for inbetween matches to go outside and smoke. Quick smoke breaks only take 5 minutes. Usually in a decent sized tournament you are waiting 20-45 minutes before your next match.

Now, I am going to expound on one of my irritants, cell phones going off during a match. Both players cellphones should be turned off or at least silent during a match. I hate to sit there while my opponent gets 2-4 calls, and talks for a length of time before he gets back to shooting.

Excellent point! That's why they have off switches.

Pretty sure I'm making the same decision at the close of this league session. I love pool but hate the stink.

This is how I feel about smoking...wait for between matches.
I was at a tournament (race to 11) and one cigarette break was allowed.
While my opponent was smoking, I was hitting balls.
My friend remarked on this and I told him I didn't come all this way to smoke.

..and I don't smoke where I live or while playing a non-smoker.

As for cell phones, I've played in tournaments where if your cell rings
while you're in a match, you lose the game....problem solved.

There is no evidence of second hand smoke being a health risk...but good try. I'm not going to start on alcohol because I am a firm believer of liberty and although drunks are sometimes obnoxious and violent, I respect their right to treat their body however they like.

It's very simple, if you have a problem with something, then avoid it. Personally, I hate animals. But you don't see me out trying to ban pets. I just choose to not hang out with pet owners for very long...you are more than welcome to choose to not go to a smoking pool room.

You DO NOT have the right to tell anyone what they can and can't do with their property. That includes bar owners. End of discussion. Go lodge a complaint. If the bar owner feels he can make more money by catering to a specific demographic, I'm sure he will do that.

This is so simple.... my neighbor smokes on his balcony. I live in a condo. Somehow, dont ask me how, but I get cig smoke inside my condo all the time. This applies to a business too you know, in terms of adjacent businesses. If you can prove the carcinogen causing smokes are not coming out of your establishment, then fine, i'm actually with you. But you can't. You can't give other people cancer and just say, oh well.

Tell ya what. Let me spray some carcinogen into your home everyday, near where you wife and baby sleep. Do you get it yet?? I don't think people like you ever will, but oh well -- too bad for us.

You all claim second hand smoke is so bad. Did you even know that you have to be in a small bar with very heavy smoke in it for 48 hours straight to even get the same effect as smoking ONE cigarette? I will agree that to a non-smoker the smell is awful. But, that is as far as it goes. Studies have shown that there is NO ill effects from second hand smoke unless you already have breathing problems or allergies to it. The cancer rates in other countries that don't ban smoking are far lower than here. There is a reason we get more cancer than anyone other country, and the gov. is blaming smoking to cover up the real reasons. They have done such a good job at it that hardly anyone even considers studying other reasons.

Sorry, but you are wrong. I have a cousin whose wife is battling lung cancer just like he is and she never smoked. The doctors told them it was from his second hand smoke.

You might want to reconsider where you are getting your facts.

This really isn't a battle of smokers vs. non-smokers. It's about liberty and the fact that some people want to infringe my rights, via government. Even if the pool room in question hung signs warning about "toxic air," someone would still be b1tching...in fact, the complaints would be worse.

JoeyA...
You KNEW people were smoking. You KNEW it was a health risk. You KNEW you'd smell like an ashtray. But you played the tournament anyway??? Obviously, the incentives in this tournament were worth the discomfort of smokers. And if you have some regrets, then don't do it next time. So kindly, STFU and make better decisions next time.

You are more than welcome to play pool in a non-smoking environment. Buy yourself a table and put it in the basement. But if another person allows you to use his stuff, in his room, you aren't entitled to anything.

Oh and BTW, YOU and only you are responsible for your health. Do not blame a smokey poolroom for your smoker's cough. Nobody forced you to stay.

Hey Drew,
GFY!

OF COURSE it is discrimination.

So is requiring smokers to go outside.

Doesn't the guy who owns the room have that right?

Jeff Livingston

This is what we call a circular arguement. You say it is discrimination because we are not giving them the same rights..

But how are you giving non-smokers the same rights by forcing them to have to abide by smokers terms.

It is harmful, and very unhealthy to both parties.

You are really clutching at straws with this kind of circular arguement.

I played in the same event that Joey played in and I totally agree, it seemed all my opponents smoked during our matches which really was annoying. There is nothing that anyone could ever say to me to convince me that smoking during a tournament match is acceptable at all.

I'm sure the few people that are arguing against Joey cant really believe they are right, they are just arguing for the sport of it, but then again there are a lot of idiots around.

Um...how is that the same thing at all? No, I don't get it. In real life, somebody is doing it to their own property. In your metaphor, you're doing it to my property.

Do it in your own home, then invite me over so I can demand that you stop. Now it's the same thing. While we're at it, I'll demand you not drink or eat bacon either. Plus, those stairs are kind of dangerous. I demand you remove them. Now we're talking about the same thing.

Very simple guys. You don't like the smoking? Don't go to a smoking pool room.

So what progress is acceptable to you? Should women make the same wage as men? Should they be able to vote; why not revert? Should gays be able to marry?
Smoking in public is being phased out. It's called progress.

Lol...wtf

Let's go to some cliches:
Jews were phased out of Nazi Germany. It's called progress.
Private property was phased out of the USSR. It's called progress.
Manufacturing plants were phased out of the USA. It's called progress.
Elected public officials were phased out of Rome. It's called progress.
Pool was phased out of TV. It's called progress.

As for your ridiculous hyperbole:

Q: Should women make the same wage as men?
A: Some women should earn the same wage as some men. Some women should earn a higher wage than some men. Some women should earn a lower wage than some men. It's not a question of gender so much as a question of relative value.

Q: Should they be able to vote; why not revert?
A: I would assume you're referring to women as "they." And I also assume that by "vote" you mean in public elections. Some women should be allowed to vote in some elections. For example, a woman living in California should not be allowed to vote in a Texas state election. Personally, I believe public elections should include some kind of voting tax, but that is a totally different subject. BTW: If you knew the real reasons why women initially gained the right to vote in public elections, you would sh1t your pants. It had a lot more to do with $$$ than it did progress.

Q: Should gays be able to marry?
A: I cannot answer this question. Marriage is a social contract between 2 people. Marriage usually involves a contract written under the authority of some religious institution. Therefore, if a man wishes to marry another man, he must first find another man willing to agree to such a contract. If these 2 men wish to be recognized as married in some sort of religious ceremony, they must find a religious institution who accepts their proposed contract. As far as I know, the state does not infringe on these rights.

However...

If you're asking whether or not 2 men should be able to enter a legal contract under the authority of the state for purposes of taxes, inheritance, or powers of authority, then I would say that all people regardless of sex, race, or sexual orientation are entitled to non-discriminatory treatment from the state. In other words, if one man and one woman are allowed special privileges by entering in a civil union, these rights should extend to ANY two people. You should be able to enter the same contract, recognized by the state, with any other person including a family member, friend, or lover. I believe this particular special case has been extended to same sex couples in most states, but I am not particularly well-informed in this subject.

By the way if someone smoking a cigarette in front of you is "sharking" I really hope you keep your pansy fussy frannie ass in black tie tournaments because you are going to be in deep sh*t if you ever visit a real pool room or try and gamble anywhere.

A smoke being lit is 'sharking'? Good god, wait until you deal with somebody whistling, some drunk tapping his beer bottle on the bar, someone standing right in your line of sight every time you go to shoot, some kid deciding $5 worth of System Of A Down on the jukebox was a good idea, the entire rail discussing how bad your last shot was, etc etc. And that's to say nothing of actual sharking. Get some headphones or whatever. Tune out distractions. You're the only one in control of your pool game, stop making excuses.
