What exactly is a snapper? What forms and strengths did they come in and what was the costs. Where they perscription? I have read alot of the old school great road playes and pro's would take these during there marathon sessions.

> From the stories I have read and been told by eyewitness accounts, snappers were,at least in the beginning,a dietary supplement that contained speed of some kind or another. It supposedly sped your metabolism up,causing you to not eat and thus lose weight, with an unintentional side effect that some pool player discovered by mistake and spread the word. Before long, they became so prevalent that if you played for the cash without it,you got stuck because your opponent was surely on it. There was also a prescription drug called Desoxin that I mentioned in another thread pretty recently. This was nothing more than 15 mg of straight up lab-grade meth,I have never really found out what it was originally prescribed to treat. These were probably worth a hell of a lot more than their weight in gold,as players were said to not care about how much they cost, they simply looked at how much they were going to make after taking it. These all were prescription diet pills that were very popular in the '70's. There was even one called a Christmas Tree.
They made you feel infalable and as though you couldn't miss.
They also were the beginning of the end for many like St. Louie, Louie. That is the first drug that he ever took. By taking the first one (and then playing great) he and others thought they needed to take them everytime they played. Naturally, that led to more & stronger stuff.
I used to take them - but only for driving long distances. They were great for staying awake to drive and not nod off. But like anything they could and were abused.
The first one (I was about 24 years old) I ever took was while playing pool. I was losing about $240 for $20 a game and went up to a friend and declared how well I felt and was playing. He said he had never seen me play that bad or lose that many games in a row. I WAS HAVING A BALL & LOSING! Something told me right then & there to never take anything while playing pool and I haven't since.
I think Truckers still take a form of them to this day.

The first time I took anything while playing pool was Black Beauties back in the early sixties. I was playing low stakes rotation for $3 on the 1,5,10, 15and 61 or better in points. I had been out late the night before and was losing my ass to someone I always beat. A friend told me to try one of these. I went in the bathroom and took it, then came back to the table for a half hour more of losing. I told my friend. “Man these ain’t nothing.” (I was in a hurry)
He told me to eat another. Long story short, I beat the guy and stayed up two more days. Oh yeah I cleaned the house and washed the car too. Johnnyt

George Carlin does a great bit about snappers. Granted that kind has nothing to do with pool, but once you try the one that George is talking about, you might get addicted too.

Back in the late 60's I was stationed at an Air Force base in norhern Calif. There were emergency kits on the walls of everyroom on the base and in each kit there were what they called 'snappers'. Think of smelling salts to revive someone from being passed out. I don't know if this is the same snapper you are talking about but they were a small glass vile you would snap and sniff, they would give you a short terms alertness...they were missing from all the kits...LOL
I did use the Xmas trees sometimes for marathon sessions. They were a time release capsule that contained a speed and a muscle relaxer...good for 10 hours or so. They were very popular with the players back then. I never got hooked but then I can't remember much about those times....hehehe

I was reading in Buddy's book, that St Louie Louie was beating everyone in his prime. When Buddy was up and coming he gave St Louie Louie the Wild 7 on multiple times and broke him. At what age did St Louie Louie pass away, and was caused caused his death?

Louie was only 41 years old.

Louie died on December 22, 1991. He was only 41 years old.

Buddy and Louie played many times. Louie was fixated on beating Buddy and wouldn't stop trying until he did. I think Buddy gave Louie the 7 and then the 8 many times in Shreveport, LA. Always sent him away busted and Louie would go get pumped back up and return a.s.a.p.
This determination and drive is what might have helped Louie become the player he evolved into.
There are many who say Louie committed suicide and it does no one any good to say any different.

I assume it's an upper. Benzocaine or some amphetamine.
