Sniper with a pad?

So, I ordered a Sniper Tip from www.billiardswarehouse.com. I ordered just the one because I wanted my local cue maker to throw it on my Predator so I could give em a try and see what all the fuss was about. The tip came but has a preinstalled pad on it, the pad is black. I didn't think the snipers came with pad, and I thought that the sniper tips had an "S" stamped on them, this tip has no "S". So the question is, did I really get a Sniper tip?

The black is just a backing; when installing the tip, just sand all (or most) of the black off and glue on.

Yes the black is just coloring...there is no pad. You should have the imprint of a circle with the crosshairs in it...like a rifle scope.

There is no pad or backing on a Sniper. The glue side is painted black. Sand it off or leave it, depending on how you install tips. Its of no consequence except appearance.

Thanks guys, I just assumed it was a pad. It has the crosshairs on it, so that's good.

Next question, what are the views on installing a pad with a sniper tip? Change in hit? Yay? Nay?

Don't waste a great tip.;)

Can I ask what the negative effects are that would steer me away from a pad?

Or how about, are there positive effects?

From what I have read on here before I think it would all be up to your preference. There are people who will say it sucks and there are people who love it. The only way to truly find out which one YOU like the best is to try it both ways. That is the best advice I can give.

??????????

Installation is the key to making a Sniper play well. Bring about 4 inches of shaft through lathe chuck put masking tape over exposed shaft. I sand off all black off back, glue wiyh Duro gel let glue set up. Take spray bottle an spray tip with water an take blade an trim sides an crown repeat the spraying maybe 3 times during process. Also I use a cupped live center pressing against tip while triming sides. I've done one dry an it would not hold crown nearly as well an would mushroom slightly. If tou spray them they cut like butter. Remove masking tape an you are ready to go.

Do not cut tip with tool post use razor blade or Irwin blade.

You must have eyes like an eagle with binoculars there is a crosshair on the back. I had to use a jewelers lope to see it.

Tiger X Shaft w/Sniper Tips

Last year at the Super Billiards Expo at Valley Forge PA I tried a Q with a Tiger X shaft that comes with a Sniper tip. I was very impressed  and ordered one with a custom made joint ring to match my Q. I use it all the time and really love it.

Recently I purchased 2 Sniper tips to have installed on other shafts. They are extremely thick. The Q guy who installed them had never done a Sniper tip before. He tried to cut them to size while dry  and could not. I told him to wet them and use a razor blade, and then he was able to cut them down and shape them using a razor blade and then sand paper. However he did not remove any layers and they are very thick at just slightly more than 1/4 inch. Is there a forseeable problem with a tip soooo thick? It shoots well with a solid hit and so far no problems.

Thats very funny...actually I do. My wife is cracking up. I've won a bit of green reading tourney flyers and such. They back me up 20 feet and say "read the bottom line"...they swear I've memorized everything on the bulletin board. I drive my wife crazy spotting deer and hawks at distances while driving 65mph. It a gift...I'm very blessed.:D
