Snooker Match, venting....

I was playing some snooker today with a guy I play pool with on occassion and like normal I started really slow the first game, althoug I came back to just barely win it. In the second game I ran 11 points after my first open shot and on my next turn I got a pretty easy shot to start out with which lead to four sevens in a row with a nice shot on a red with natural shape for the 7 again. My opponent, who I thought was going to spot the 7, then starts to gather the balls saying that he didn't want to have to battle back from that deficit.

This really pissed me off because now I never know what my run would have been. I could have bobbled the next red or I could have run 50 or more points! I immediately quit the game and left the establishment. I can understand not wanting to try to come back from a large deficit, but not letting a man finish his run when he's on a roll is really bad form.

either way... I can understand how a man would want to finish his run.. even me being a complete beginner knows part of skill is knowing how many balls you can run, in an form of billiards/pool

therefore, knowing that one is capable of running so many balls is really a confidence booster, the first time you run 5,10,20 balls straight can really take you to the next level of your playing because you start to play with another level of confidence which leads to just playing more relaxed, which is a huge part of pool...

so man, i feel your pain, that sucks :( ... but in the same vein.. you should be able to walk away from that table knowing you completely pounded your opponent into submission... congratulations

The first thing I would do in this situation is to cancel my membership and change clubs to one that doesn't allow small children to play on the snooker table.

Secondly, remember that you have been friends for a long time. Brush it off. Reflect on the times he has been there for you when you needed someone to lean on. Share a meal. Have some fun together. Go out together for a few beers and watch him drink himself senseless. You are the last person he would suspect would chop his knob off. It will be easy.

It was just practice. That still doesn't give him the right to deprive me of my potential run though!

Maybe that was the problem... Throw in a couple of bucks and folks who don't really respect the game will turn fanatical about it.

That's not practice. Practice is you alone on the table trying to calibrate your game. Nobody was paying you to do it either. You were the one paying for the privilege. That means you were doing it for the fun like the rest of us. If it’s not fun there’s no point doing it. Big breaks may be nice to have on your resume, but I never again beat the satisfaction I felt the first time I knocked in a break of 39. Spoiling that moment for anybody is a shitty trick.

I’m sure you will repeat the feat before too long. It sounds to me like you’re reaching the stage when you can confidently mop up what’s going spare around the pack, and 40+ breaks will become a regular thing. There is nothing in cue sports that compares to raising the bar on a full size snooker table. I envy you.

That guy is OBVIOUSLY not a friend, or a true lover of the game. I wouldn't waste my time playing him EVER AGAIN. Life is too short. I limit myself to playing opponents who enjoy the competition (keyword=enjoy). Poor sports, sharks, and hustlers should be avoided at all costs (even if you have the nuts).
