Asia is the home of the greatest players and has more pool enthusiasts than anywere else. It's hard to see why Matchroom would move the event, other than, perhaps, to the Phillipines.
It is a catch 22 in my mind. Yes Asia has a way larger fan base for pool then the USA. So does Europe for that matter, it seems likely pool will replace snooker in time there and the fans will likely shift to pool by in large (we can thank Davis and Williams for getting the sport some publicity and respect to those snooker fans). They will definately get more fans to the event and more interest. That being the case the area that needs more *GOOD* exposure to this sport is the USA. I am happy with the tourney being in Asia for a while to really get that already pool crazy area a really well established fan base and reward their respect and interest in the sport. Then I would like to see a 1 year stopover in Europe again.
Then really hype the hell out of the return at long last of the WPC to the USA, they need to market the hell out of it or they might as well keep it overseas. Europe really hyped the game, the entrance down the ramps to each TV match, live broadcasts, the hot female ref, they did alot of things right that will keep Joe Public on the channel and thinking "hmm, this is a little cooler then I remember it!". By this time the winner will likely be making close to $100,000 which is getting into the realm of decent money that will impress the public. They would be well served hiring a marketing agent for the event much like the agents that hype the NBA, MLB, NFL, ect... witty TV commercials, cool looking event posters that hype the money and gambling lifestyle (Atlantic City is probably the best location for the event due to the massive population base near by and the image of the city combined). Try to get a good sponser, I dont see how it would be hard to get someone like Budweiser or JB or American Airlines (or a combination of a few big ones would be even better) sponsering the event along with good advertising on the TV spots and live broadcasts for Atlantic City as the Vegas of the East (get some money from the tourism and convention center people in AC for this, they would love the publicity it could generate).
Once you make live broadcasts you have a huge chance to present the sport in a very different fashion such as pool has never been seen before, akin to the big sports. At the end of the event if they bring out a big check whatever dickhead decided to do that needs to be fired YESTERDAY! Use a suitcase of cash you retards, is it so hard to understand that Joe Public will be WAY more intersted at $100,000 sitting there in cash rather then a 4 foot wide check? Such a small thing that makes such a big difference in the presentation and image of the sport.
All of the above about presentation should be read by Charlie Williams and used for the UPA as well. Sterilization of this sport on TV has been its downfall combined with non-live broadcasts that remove all the excitement of the unexpected. I swear to god, it kinda irks me because I know for a fact that I could do so much better given the reigns. Get out there and do some work guys, talk to some big business, work on the image and make this sport more exciting, it is not bloody rocket science and at the end of the day when I see what is produced it comes off as nothing but lazy and cheap and boring.
