So what was this old billiards place right on Times Square in 1911?

Just noticed this in series of historical pics. I bet it was pretty upscale.

The Astor Theatre (right hand side of picture) was around 45th St. It was torn down to build the Marriott Hotel Times Square. I think the photo is from the north, looking south.

I'm not sure if the building with the billiards parlor is still there but it's certainly a very distinctive building. I'll check next time I'm there.

It's not Ames. :-( According to the New York Times, Ames Billiard Academy was located in Times Square, a second-floor loft at 160 West 44th Street, at Seventh Avenue.

That narrow building is One Times Square. From the south looking north, 7th avenue would be on my left. Instead its facing south, so its Broadway on the left.

bdorman,
You're right, its north looking south!

In 1904, the Packard dealership in Times Square was located in that building, address 1540 Broadway.

Here is a high quality scan of the picture that can be blown up. Even back then Times Square was crawling with cops.

I work about a block away from Times Square and I can say with absolute certainty that it looks nothing like it did in 1911. Nearly every building has been replaced, many of which have been constructed in the past 15 years.

The hardest part about this is, there really were so many poolrooms in NYC over the decades. Even the most famous ones I have been to are difficult to find pictures of (try searching for Chelsea Billiards sometime). Jay Helfert would probably know best. Times Square has had two famous rooms (Ames & 7-11) but there have been others over the years. I would guess this isn't a picture of either room but I could be wrong.
