soak elk masters in milk?

The theory was to soak them in goats milk, them squeeze the snot out of them, You get a much harder tip, that still enables great English qualities, less percentage on mushrooming and no miscues.

so does it really make the elkmasters play differently than any tip you could just buy harder?

what would you squeeze them with?

I go to the machine shop and use the press,
I do this to be consistant, Hammers tend to crack the tip to often and the bench vise is to inconsistant. I belieive when they do it themselves, their using a hammer.

hmmm, maybe i'll have to try this.

do you think the tips play differently than any other tip after this process, or is there a tip that you can just buy that plays this way?

thanks mike

In todays tips, they have come a long way with the introduction of layered tips BUT, they are still inconsistant. So I would have to say no. There is something about that certain process, that Efren, Santos, Bustamonte. They just prefer it.

I switched back to Elk Master tips 8 months ago. The first one I put was shot in about 6 weeks (hey, I play a fair bit). The second one has lasted for over 6 months now, and I have not had to reshape it ! It has mushroomed a bit (not enough to bother me), but still works like a charm. It seems to have been pounded down a fair bit, but still feels as soft as ever. I wonder if this milk trick helps get all Elk Masters to work this well ... also, do they smell bad after the milks expiry date ?

Efren Reyes has been using Sniper Tips by Tiger Products for over 1 1/2 years. He switched from compressed ElkMasters at that time.

Hopefully they've dried by then,

Soak an Elk Master tip in whole cream or half-and-half milk for 24 hours. The casein in the cream/milk is a binder. It binds the fibers in the leather together. [Casein - a group of proteins found in milk. It is used in cheese, adhesives, and water paints.]

Another method is soaking in a mixture of 10% dry skin lotion, 40% isopropyl alcohol, and 50% glycerin for 24 hours.

Then compress the tip in a vice for 24 hours. Tighten the vise as much as you can. One tip may compress to about one-half of its initial height, another may only compress to one-forth of its initial height. These tips which compress differently can come from the same box! (One of the reasons for doing this in the first place!)

FYI - I do not like this method since there is no way of "measuring" how much force is applied when compressing the tips. (I don't see how you can get consistent results.) Also since new "high quality" tips are now on the market, I don't think it is necessary do this any more.

Ive also heard about this. Ive been meaning to give it a try, but i havent yet. I still have half a box of elk masters so i'll try it out.

How much pressure are you applying? Do you just place them between two flat plates or is one of the plates dimpled?

I think they straight up said you cant tell how much pressure you are applying. You also cant tell by how much compression either as some of they compress at varying rates. I imagine its just a matter of squeezing it til you cant reasonable squeeze it any more. I also would imagine that dimpling the bottom side might assist in glueing as it would provie more surface area for the glue to grab. BUT I cant imagine that you HAVE TO dimple either side for it to work.

Two flat vice plates. Dimpling not recommended. Or get some C clamps from Home Depot, the ones that screw tight.

Mike said he uses a press, with a press you can adjust pressure. When I said "dimples I meant large dimples to maintain the domed tops.

Soak elkmasters in milk - i keep reading about the phillippino players doing this.........what does it do?
thanks

I used to do this. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Once you do I bet you wont drink milk any other way.
