In the 70's and part 80's I used clear laquer on Blue Diamond tips. I felt then they were much better but they and elkmaster have changed their mixture a bit. The leather in both is a coarse grain and they do hold chalk very well.
The process I used was soak them in clear laquer for a few minutes. Then use 2 flat steel plates in a vise. As far as compression. When the vice just puts enough pressure on them tighten it down say a 1/4 turn. If you want them more fim, 1/3 turn or half turn etc. Once you find the right amount of compression for your taste, you have it. From there on out just tighten the same amount.
It's not exact but very close without buying anything expensive. There are compression guages made to use in a vice but it's not really necessary. You might even want to give clear epoxy, urethane paint etc a try. I say clear because I don't think color paint with a lot of pigment would be the way to go, but who knows.

I think, that was about the time right before he had a friend put on a tip for him ( a Sniper this time ).
I think maybe its soaked in milk to get all the air bubbles out? Toss a few tips into water and some will float, meaning that theres air pockets in it. When they soak, they also absorb the liquid, so compressing it squeezes out the liquid and completely crushes any air pockets. Has anyone ever asked any of the phillippino players?
