Soft hit drill

http://www.youtube.com/user/forcefollow#p/u/15/w8lRrLVBUVs

I showed marcus this drill some time ago and he was kind enough to make a video for it.

It involves slow rolling, kicking and carom shots.

You take the CB first from in the kitchen and shoot(roll) it as close to the spot as possible. Then you use the other balls (15 of them) to try and hit, kick, carom the CB Directly on the spot. If you run out of balls just reset the drill. My PR is 4 shots but typically I score around 6-10.

Its not severely difficult but it surely isn't easy, I've seen some solid players go through more than a few racks trying to get it.

Nurse shots

Do you have any drills to practice Finesse shots?

Set OB close to rail and put cb very close and nudge the OB softly moving as little as possible down the rail. Of course drive ball or cue to rail for good hit. How many shots can you make to go the length of table? The softer and less distance OB moves will ensure more shots. Ten is pretty good. Don't stroke these shots. Put tip very close to cue and just softly nudge the cb. Again no real stroke just a push.

Just got on my table and had ten nurse shots before I got to side pocket! I said ten was pretty good, let's now say twenty is good! LOL. Don't let cue be closer to rail than OB or you will send OB out into table, which is counter productive.

This is a great drill for forcing you to plan the exact speed you need. I practiced this for a while by myself. The first few times through I was getting it in 5 or 6 shots. Then consistantly getting it in 3 or 4. At the Poolhall I showed some people this and the first time I demonstrated the drill I got a 2. Then I explained that its tougher than it looks and I tried again and got a 1! That's right, I slow rolled the cueball directly to the footspot on the first shot. So people thought that it couldn't be that hard. I sat back and watched lots of people trying this only to go through all 15 balls each time and not come within 6 inches of the spot.

Excellent drill and everyone should do this from time to time to refine the nip/bunt shot speed.

I've never really gotten the benefit of this drill. Sure, it will force you to think about position play, but there is no game I am aware of where the cue ball is not allowed to touch the rail. So it seems like you are parcticing something that really doesn't come into play in a game. Wouldn't it be just as effective to learn how to use the rails for position?

I see it as a test, but not so much as a practical drill.

JMHO

Steve

This would be good practice for One Pocket---taking an intentional scratch. Also, 14.1.

Steve that progressive drill is the best. I have bin doing it for a couple of years now, and helped me out.

Something that instructors tend to forget to mention: When you need to strike the cue ball very gently, you don't need a full stroke! For example, when I'm playing a safety that requires the cue ball to move less than a few inches, I shorten my stroke dramatically. This means getting your bridge hand closer to the cue ball and reducing your practice strokes to something like an inch or less. But don't try to achieve this by simply moving your bridge hand AFTER you take your stance. As with all shots, address the cue ball and THEN place your feet in proper position. In other words, don't just lean forward to shorten your stroke, but adjust your entire approach.

Are there any drills for working on hitting a softer shot? I tend to put too much or too little on a shot. Especially when trying to do a safety shot. So My teammates and I are trying to come up with a drill to help me work on these types of shots.

Thanks in advance!
Rich

Hi Rich, I would like you to check out this video of a brand new type of training cue now available in the USA, this cue will not only help you with playing a softer shot, it will help you with your all round game as well.
The cue forces you into playing in a more controlled manner and with a vastly smoother cueing action.
Watch video and if interested in the cue just get back to me tgwusauk@hotmail.com
