Softbreak ?

I, personally, think a full tournament of the world’s elite doing it would be the most boring event ever broadcast. I would stop paying for WNT TV if that’s what they were to air.
I don't think the majority of the pros would do it because it is hard to get to Corey's level of accuracy with that break and even he may struggle to get out with the racks it produces as often the balls are relatively clustered. All went well for him in 2001 with that break, but he wasn't always that successful with it. If the balls are randomly racked it also leads to more variety in the runouts even with such a break utilized.

You must have missed the tournaments in the early 2000s when all the pros were breaking soft and making the wing ball every time. Bustamante was breaking about 10mph ... I think I saw that in the world championship.

Yep. Corey wasn't the only player soft breaking. It got to be kind of a joke.

I didn't realize it was that widespread- perhaps with the 9 ball racked on the spot it wouldn't happen as frequently.

I know that Match Room is totally opposed to 10 ball, but perhaps that would be partial solution. I also know that guys have perfected the 10 ball break, but they usually don't break soft in 10 ball.

This is where the 3 (or 4 in some games) point rule is introduced right? Interestingly, this created a lot of variety in breaking styles. I know some players who break at what I consider to be soft speed, but making 3 points.
DUYA just implemented the break box, which I find redundant on the Chinese table, the middle pockets hoover up that 1 ball. They also must have 3 past the headstrong (CB not included), which does add some interest and variety.
Though Interesting, I can't help feel its knee-jerk reaction to MR and an attempt to get more and more foreigners into the event. I preferred watching Xue Zhengqi blast racks at warp speed.

Here is the finals of the US Open shortly before the soft break was outlawed.

The rule used in the US Open under Barry Behrman after the Corey-MIka match was, "you gotta hit'em hard." That same rule was used in the current Open. It's subjective. I believe the problem in the Gorst-Baoanan was with Baoanan's first two breaks. I tuned in late so I didn't see them, but the commentators mentioned them.
In the second rack, after Mika hit a wired combo to sink the 9-ball...then scratched:

Danny Diliberto: He looked like he was dumping his backer.
:ROFLMAO:

Then have a clear rule that 1 object ball must pass the headstring or touching the back end rail.

If people think this is soft break, try watching 1 pocket game 🤣

the game of 9 ball in itself is not exciting to watch except for die hards trying to improve.
it needs to go for the viewers.
