Some questions

I am very excited to be getting a 5 x 10 Brunswick Anniversary 5 x 10 snooker table. What size balls would be correct for this table? What cues would you recommend? Are the wooden scoring beads used for snooker also?

That's fantastic! Congrats.

A ten foot table typically requires 2 1/8" size balls. You should be able to pick those up pretty cheap in a local pool store. Some even have numbers on the colours. Although snooker purists would never go for those:wink:

Any cue will do, just try some out and find something that feels right to you. Hopefully the same store will have a few snooker cues for you to try.

The score board is usually brass sliders, for 0-19 and eicosal to allow you to count above 100 per frame. I've attached a picture of a simple one. They can get a lot more elaborate than this. Either way, anything will do as long as you can count to 147.

I grew up scoring with the wooden beads that go only to 50. A high scorer will need to remember how many strings of beads he has. :)

We also didn't keep individual scores, the score was rather a "difference" score. If player A made 40 points, then player B made 16 points, the string would reflect a score of 24 points (the players definitely knew who was ahead).

The beads work well, a chalkboard will suffice, and I'm sure the score mechanism shown above would work just fine.

Congrats on the nice table!

We have a 10x5 table and I have experimented with several different ball sizes. In my lowly opinion, 2 1/8" balls are definitely to large and they don't bounce properly as the rails are too low. 2 1/16" are a little too big with 15 reds because the area around the black spot is too congested. I bought a set of 2" balls and they are perfect to me. Hope this helps.

Also, the cue matters. Make sure you get a snooker cue with 10mm tip or smaller and brass ferrile. Don't worry about name brands or being hand-spliced vs. machine spliced. Just order one online, practice and have fun.
