Some suggestions on how to make the game more popular for the general sports fan...

There's been a lot of talk on here about the game's popularity (or lack thereof), and about whether or not certain players, or certain formats, are good for the game.

In the spirit of that discussion, I'd like to make the following suggestions as to how we can spruce up the game a bit and make it a little more exciting and fan-friendly, so as to gain a wider audience (I'm thinking especially of how these changes might make televised matches on ESPN a little more exciting).

General rule revisions:

--Allow players to stand around the table and move around the table while their opponent shoots.

--Allow players to verbally taunt one another during a match. Taunting can include, but need not be limited to, talking about how boring and slow your opponent is; ridiculing your opponent for using a jump cue; making fun of your opponent's cue, attire, or appearance.

--Institute a 20-second shot clock, with one 30-second timeout per rack. If a match goes hill-hill, reduce the shot clock to 10 seconds for the case game.

--Allow the fans to cheer and shout during play. This would include shouting just when a player is about to shoot, much like NBA fans do when an opponent shoots a free throw.

Special rule revisions (these could be optional for matches):

--Allow wagers during the match between players on particular shots.

--Allow a player to move one ball per game on the table before his opponent's next shot (since everyone would likely choose to move the nine ball each game, we can stipulate that the ball-move must be made before the seven ball). This would definitely lend some unpredictability to even the most routine looking runout.

--Randomly make one of the balls during one of the games in a match the secret 'exploding ball'--a ball that literally explodes and distintegrates upon impact with the cueball. The player shooting the cueball into the exploding ball automatically loses that game (we would have to find a way to prevent the ball from exploding during the break of course).

What a bum.

I'm just recovering from a bad case of flu since Wednesday and I nearly died laughing upon reading your post. Reading it was purely entertaining and nothing more. Nice try.

Actually something like that probably would get high TV ratings. I have visions of those staged "wrestling matches" I watched when I was a kid.

Let's see....

Instead of wearing "proper attire", one player could come out wearing a viking outfit including metal hat with horns and looking real mean (crowd boo's) and another could come out wearing a white suit and a white cowboy hat (crowd cheers).

Then you could get a visiting player from Germany wearing lederhosen, etc.

Billy Bob, I think you are on the right track. Upon research that I have done (very generic and half assed...as I am lazy, LMAO!) I have discovered that most males, regardless of if they are ball bangers or rack runners, have indicated point blank that they would watch more pool IF the ladies were in bikinis....they did not indicate a color preference. I think this is a fine idea, BUT what is good for the goose must be good for the gander...and the men must wear Speedos...one size too small and I have a color preference...Hot Pink. I don't think any type of shot clock would be necessary when the boys play in their newly required uniform. :D :D :D

Well, maybe for one tournament..............thanks for the entertainment!

Think one thing everyone could do is taker a Friend to play Pool. If they have a good time, maybe they will become Hook on Pool.

A Hands on Experence....

I like the idea of putting the ladies in bikinis, although I think we should reserve it for invitation-only formats. There are some WPBA players I'd pay good money NOT to see in a bikini. :)

I am seriously disappointed in my male counterparts on this site after seeing who finally presented this idea.

Seriously disappointed.

:D

(although I agree with PoolBum's assessment too ;))

Sounds great Billy_Bob. I think my amateurs might be up for it. I've got a pretty good group of guys and gals that play and I think it'd be fun. Sure would make for an interesting day.
