In the English games, the players almost exclusively use open bridges.
There may be an argument for using a closed bridge with the heavier US Pool CB when using extreme power, but such shots probably only come up once in every 10 games.
Personally, I don't think the closed bridge is as stable or as adaptable for intricate adjustments. After all, there is one less finger on the table to stabilize the bridge.
Anyway, if you play enough either way you'll adapt. It would hardly make a difference in player's ability if they changed their bridge from one to the other.

Spot on Colin. When I started out playing pool in England the only real reference we had was from watching snooker on TV, you never saw pool back then. I always use an open bridge because it's what I'm used to, I recently tried breaking with a closed bridge & the results were horrible!!
By the way, I saw your Youtube video on power breaking & decided to utilize your advice last night. I have to say I was very happy with the results! Had some beautiful breaks, balls split very nicely all over the table. Even though I hadn't played in 2 weeks & was suffering with a bad back my run-out chances were greatly improved.
Great stuff Colin & thank you very much.
