Something I noticed Efren Reyes doing

I think that pool players often use or learn the closed bridge simply out of imitation.

In the English games, the players almost exclusively use open bridges.

There may be an argument for using a closed bridge with the heavier US Pool CB when using extreme power, but such shots probably only come up once in every 10 games.

Personally, I don't think the closed bridge is as stable or as adaptable for intricate adjustments. After all, there is one less finger on the table to stabilize the bridge.

Anyway, if you play enough either way you'll adapt. It would hardly make a difference in player's ability if they changed their bridge from one to the other.

Spot on Colin. When I started out playing pool in England the only real reference we had was from watching snooker on TV, you never saw pool back then. I always use an open bridge because it's what I'm used to, I recently tried breaking with a closed bridge & the results were horrible!!

By the way, I saw your Youtube video on power breaking & decided to utilize your advice last night. I have to say I was very happy with the results! Had some beautiful breaks, balls split very nicely all over the table. Even though I hadn't played in 2 weeks & was suffering with a bad back my run-out chances were greatly improved.

Great stuff Colin & thank you very much.

My thoughts also!

if i can comfortably make a closed bridge without moving another ball or touching other balls than i like to use it...only time i use an open bridge is when i dont have the room to use a closed...or if the CB is on a rail. seems to me its just a matter of what you feel most comfortable with.

I was taught to use a good closed bridge for most shots (and it took awhile for it to be natural!) but I was started out with an open one! Many shooters have a problem maintaining a good closed bridge and are more comfortable on most shots using and open one ! for those folks they will do better with what feels more comfortable and relaxed! After all its really about a smooth accurate stroke! isn't it?

I play with an open bridge, I can't aim as good with a closed bridge. A good player told me he recommends switching to a closed bridge on longer shots or shots where you need to hit the ball hard.

I noticed Efren doing that, uses an open bridge but switches to closed sometimes.
I'm very open hand heavy. A lot of times, a player will have the following progression:

Clumsy open bridge
Slightly better open bridge
Awkward closed bridge
Better closed bridge
Abandon open bridge
Get better at the game
Add open bridge to the closed bridge

I used closed bridge when i feel nervous. If not during normal playing, 55% of my shot is open-B and 45% of my shots were closed-B.
