Something You Would Never Say Out Loud

most all of the up table bunting guys wont bet much so i rarely will play them. and you cant make any money playing half hour games for 20 bucks.
without a total lock and win every single game. even then its like working in a factory for small pay.

While not having anything to do with odd habits that I do while shooting, I hate admitting around good players that I really do not like 1 pocket and feel it's an annoying game that takes the fun out of playing. But I am guilty of pretending at times, and can get away with it because I do watch it and study it to get more general knowledge about the game, so I am capable of talking the talk, I just hate walking the walk LOL

I also do not agree with anyone that states things like "it's the Indian not the arrow" and snicker when people say "I paid for college hustling pool", "a good player can shoot with a broom stick" or "I have not played in a while". Things like that are way too general and not very accurate.

I always thought playing with a longer cue, say closer to 70" would improve your game but was afraid the cue builder or players would think I'm crazy.

Then along comes Earl and finally somebody else that's not crazy thinks the same way. 🤔

Then there are guys like Pat that thinks the opposite as he used a shorter than normal cue. I am actually not sure if anyone else did that.

laughed out of the pool hall.

I mean even like Tin Cup, Bull Durham stuff.

The Stork might look like a Dork. They are deadly hunters.

Wait, who is this not crazy person you're talking about? I know you can't mean Earl.

So here's my question: do you base any of your play on something so crazy, so out there -- but that works for you -- that you hesitate saying it out loud for fear of being laughed out of the pool hall.

I’m envisioning you saying “Lou Figueroa” after every shot

Before every break, I slide the cueball into the cushion, place the ball, wipe my hand on the rail, wipe my hand on trouser leg, get into position. I won't feel comfortable to break until I do this. This is more OCD than PSR, and serves no purpose whatsoever. I consider it quite embarrassing and ridiculous. But then I also have previous history of OCD behavior that was quite a pain in the ass in my life, and that I worked hard to shake. Probably why I find it so ridiculous and embarrassing.
No need to feel embarrassed. It's just a thing you do. I understand you don't like to feel that way though. But we all have something. I've got some serious anxiety. It is uncomfortable, but I try to accept it and not be embarrassed about it. Thanks for sharing it here. I have a Funny story I used to wear big glasses when I played. Before every break I would push my glasses up the snug against my face so they say up as high as possible. Then i didn't have time to play for about 5 years and in that time I switched to contact lenses. I noticed every time I broke I still pushed the non-existent glasses up against my face. Kinda funny. We build a "pre-shot routine" it may not have a purpose beyond, it simply being part of our routine.

I use math to figure out kick shots if it isn't a simple kick. For a kick off a short rail, I determine where the cue ball is from pocket closest to it and give it that number (counting each diamond as 10). Then I give the object ball a number where it sits. Say the cue ball is inline with 13 and object ball is on 29 line. Subtract 13 from 29 (29-13=16). Divide the 16 by 2 (16/2=8) because you are kicking off short rail. Now I add the 8 to 13 (8+13=21). I aim for 21 and it is usually a good hit or close most of the time. Same process for kicking off a long rail except you don't need to divide it by 2.
Sounds convoluted but once you get used to doing the math in your head it doesn't take very long at all.

I am just hyper aware of it, and it makes me feel silly. Not when I am in 'full flow' but when something happens to disrupt it, like the ball slides out of my hand when sliding it on the cushion or something and I have to start again, I feel like I'm wasting time, or look odd starting that routine again. Most people don't notice, and I have seen other people do things I consider weird. But it's one of the only things that in my life now that reminds me of how bizarre my brain has been in the past. A bit like a hangover.

I am more consistent with this, than my actual PSR (which when I am feeling good, and in full flow, shortens slightly as I turn the pace on)

Hahaha pushing the bridge of your nose like a magic button. The unconscious mind is a funny old thing! Thanks for sharing :)

I would never say I will give that guy the last two and the breaks . Then again I can't play a lick anymore .
